Book Report: Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins

Hey there, friends! So it kind of seemed like our joint reviews/book reports fell by the wayside, huh? We took a hiatus from them for a little while, but we’re excited to be reviving this feature because we just miss talking about books together. There’s just something delightful and wonderful and exhilarating about reading the […]

Alexa S. - Ladies, it makes my heart so happy that you’re reviewing together again on RBR! It’s been much too long. And every single thing you’ve said about Isla? I’m pretty much in agreement with it all. I personally will miss Steph’s book because she not only crafts delightful, swoony romances, but she also brings to life characters that are real and flawed and wonderful to be around. And she manages to include family and friends and other things too!

Book Report: Kiss Kill Vanish by Jessica Martinez - […] In the past, we’ve done lots of gushing as we’ve oohed and ahhed over books like ISLA AND THE HAPPILY EVER AFTER, but today’s discussion involves a few differing opinions on our overall opinion of KISS KILL […]

Danielle @ Love at First Page - Loved reading all your thoughts! I wish I could hear Stephanie Perkins speak in person, because she sounds like such a sweetheart and so genuine and insightful. I can definitely see how this book was an extension of her feelings at the time while writing. It’s amazing all that she went through and was able to give us a beautiful book.
Isla is definitely my favorite of the series – I enjoyed the progression of their relationship, and I like that they get together almost immediately. That happens much more often than YA books would have us believe. 😛

September 23, 2014 - 2:37 pm

Meg - Love this! And so glad Isla was a winner for you both. I’m eagerly anticipating my own reading of this one . . . I loved Anna and felt strongly positive about Lola, so I was hoping the series would end on a high note.

September 23, 2014 - 10:56 am

Brianna - What a fun way to review a book. I wish I had a book BFF.

A Glimpse Inside Lola’s Bedroom (#IslaIsComing)

You can learn a lot about someone by their room. Don’t you think? It’s been really fun to take the time to read Anna + Lola back-to-back for the first time in forever. Did you remember how super neat Anna was? (She can give Danny Tanner a run for his money.) Or how all-over-the-place messy Lola was? It’s […]

Sara (of The Page Sage) - I kind of wish Lola were real so she could help decorate my dorm room, lol. That canopy is gorgeous!!

August 17, 2014 - 9:31 pm

Estelle - Hi Cameran! You won our giveaway! I just sent you an email + hope to hear from you in 48 hours! Thanks so much and congrats!

August 17, 2014 - 2:24 am

Nuzaifa @ Say It with Books - A gorgeous canopy and pretty wigs, I think I like this girl! 😀

I haven’t read Stephanie Perkins’ books yet so thank you so much for the opportunity!

August 16, 2014 - 11:42 pm

Tara - Ahhh! I haven’t read Lola yet, but I love the photos you collected to showcase her bedroom. Now that Isla is out, I plan to read both back to back. Thank you for hosting this giveaway!

August 15, 2014 - 7:47 pm

Michelle Lee - Thank you so much for this amazing giveaway! I love a good romance and it’s been a series on my list to read. The cover of the series are absolutely stunning and beautiful! I don’t think it does the book justice! When I read the synopsis of the story I wanted to be whisked away to Paris and experience just like the characters haha. I hope I win so I can see how amazing Stephanie Perkins has written this wonderful story. <3 🙂

August 15, 2014 - 6:58 am

Sana // artsy musings of a bibliophile - Whoa, Lola’s room is something right out of India being so bright and all. I think I’ll like her.

So I guess now’s the time to admit that neither do I own any of the Perkins’ book nor I’ve ever read any. Oops.

I love contemporary and they do sound right up my alley. I even tried to read Anna last year but couldn’t get around to it. I do plan to read them this year, as well but let’s see.

Thanks for the awesome giveaway! =D

August 15, 2014 - 1:10 am

Cali W. - Thanks for the giveaway! Love that room and that hot pink desk. I love these books. <3

August 14, 2014 - 2:58 pm

Lola - I’ve heard so many good things about these books, but for some reason haven’t picked them up yet.
That bed and canopy in the picture looks gorgeous and just like Lola my room is usually messy as well. I do clean it up once in a while. btw I really like the new covers for this series, they are pretty!

August 14, 2014 - 2:30 pm

Summer - Now that I’ve seen Lola’s room, I’m more eager than ever to finally read these books. The bright pink desk, the classic movie stars on the walls, I’m thinking Lola and I will get along very well.

Thanks for hosting this giveaway!

August 14, 2014 - 2:03 pm

Tanya (Read. Run. Study.) - This post has me very intrigued about Lola!

August 14, 2014 - 1:00 pm

Eileen M. - I am so happy Isla & the Happily Ever After is finally out in the world. I am a huge fan of Anna & Lola. Stephanie Perkins has done a great job weaving the characters & story lines throughout all 3 books. These books are one of my favorite series. Contemporary at it’s best.

August 14, 2014 - 8:43 am

Maria Malaveci - I have heard such great things about this series, and I want to read it so bad! Thank you so very much for the chance! I am crossing my fingers ♥ ♥

Ann - I can’t wait to read Lola! Eek!

August 13, 2014 - 9:44 pm

August 13, 2014 - 9:34 pm

Kelly L. - All those pretty wigs!
If only I have the courage to wear one. ;D

August 13, 2014 - 8:01 pm

tabithasbookblog - Lola’s room is perfection!! It was actually one of my favorite parts of this book because it was one of those rare cases where the room described perfectly reflects the character. This room IS Lola. And that’s what is so great.

Have you read Isla yet? Her room is really great as well. Although it’s only described like once.

August 13, 2014 - 2:36 pm

MK - I am so excited for Isla!! Loved this post, cute concept.

August 13, 2014 - 10:49 am

Laura D - I absolutely adore this book series. So much so, in fact, that I lend them out every chance I get. It would be wonderful to have a nice, pristine collection of the three for my bookshelves, so I can continue to spread the love with a “traveling copy” for friends to borrow.

August 13, 2014 - 1:27 am

Arnie Arce - Am I the only one who haven’t read this beauties yet? I should dive in the books soon. Then share it to friends who haven’t read it yet too. (IF they haven’t read it).

The story seems great. Many positive reviews about the books. Can’t wait to read it all of it!

August 13, 2014 - 1:21 am

Amber @ YA Indulgences - This is my first time reading Anna and Lola. I finished Anna in about two and a half days. I’m reading Lola now and hope to finish tomorrow even though I don’t have Isla.

Oh my gosh! I love that you actually posted pictures of how Lola’s room looks. I recently read that section in the book and I was like “I would love that room”. I’m totally fawning over that canopy. How gorgeous! Maybe one day…

What a great giveaway! Thank you!

August 13, 2014 - 12:11 am

Melissa @ Writer Grrl Reads - The thing that I love the most in the pictures above is the Goodnight Moon quote! I actually literally JUST finished reading that book to Marko a few minutes ago — he loves it!

August 12, 2014 - 10:07 pm

Kristin Jones - I haven’t actually read this series yet! But I am such a fan of Stephanie Perkins and her blog…I just know I will love them. Just like I enjoy this blog as well as you two ladies!

August 12, 2014 - 8:24 pm

Alexa S. - I just LOVE that you chose to show us Lola’s room! It’s seriously the coolest thing to imagine, and a very creative way to pay tribute to a super creative character. I’ve got nothing but love for this series and Stephanie Perkins, so it’s certainly fun to be hopping around the #IslaIsComing posts and see what everyone has to say!

August 12, 2014 - 6:51 pm

Sandy - That canopy is gorgeous! The first time I read both Anna and Lola, I liked Anna more but I think I might be more of a Lola fan now. Either way, Stephanie’s books are so fun! 🙂

August 12, 2014 - 6:25 pm

Jenn @SeeJennRead - So so so nice of you to give these away!! I can’t wait to read Isla and share then with my 14 yr old sis who fell in love with Anna recently. 🙂 I hope I win!!

August 12, 2014 - 3:43 pm

August 12, 2014 - 2:47 pm

Esty @ Boarding with Books - Can you believe I’ve never read anything by Stephanie Perkins? Of course everyone’s over the moon about them, so I would love to get my hands on them… I’m sure they’re amazing! And loving those room pics- they got me more hopeful to win these(: You’ll email the winner?
Thanks so much for the chance!

August 12, 2014 - 2:45 pm

Courtney @ Courtney Reads A Lot - I’m loving this room! I would love to have that bed! I need to read this series pronto because all I hear is good things. 😀 Thanks for the giveaway!

August 12, 2014 - 2:36 pm

Justine @ paperback heart - This is so perfect! I decided not to do an Anna/Lola re-read before Isla and now I’m kicking myself because why WOULDN’T I want to re-visit these wonderful girls? I can totally picture the Lola in my head in this room.

Nailed It: We’re Back (and It’s Summer!)

Hiya! So we took a little unexpected hiatus from our NAILED IT feature (somehow 3 months has passed) but we’ve still been painting our nails and sharing new colors with each other. (Our latest addiction is the Sinful Colors brand you can pick up at the drugstore. The polish was recently highly rated in Consumer […]

Alexa S. - YAY FOR A NEW NAILED IT! And you both totally nailed it with these cover + polish combos. I’m loving all the bright colors, since I tend to gravitate towards those when the weather is warmer!

Shelve It: In Which We Buy All the Books

Howdy, friends! We’re both checking in to confess how many books share the books we’ve purchased lately with another Shelve It. It’s been a good, good month for reading and we both, um, went a little overboard. Our wallets are feeling quite depleted, but we’re really excited about all of these and we hope you are, […]

Judith - M, I can’t wait to see what you think of Pointe. I’ve heard AMAZING things about it. I also thoroughly enjoyed Rites of Passage and On the Fence, so I hope you’ll like them.

E, whoa, amazing books! Of course, Open Road Summer is my FAVORITE. I also love the Great cake, and I can’t wait to read that.

May 3, 2014 - 1:56 am

Alexa S. - Whee, happy reading ladies! I think I got roughly the same amount of books you each did individually, so we’re good. I’d say we bought just the right amount for such an awesome week of releases!

April 30, 2014 - 10:09 pm

brittany @ The Book Addict's Guide - Hahaha M’s super incriminating purchase page! but good purchases!!! It’s okay, E, it happens to the best of us. Amazing events! So much fun. It’s hard when they’re all back-to-back but it’s also just like a whirlwind of amazing! And YAY Open Road Summer finally arrived! Yessss!

April 27, 2014 - 5:13 pm

Hannah @ So Obsessed With - Not going to lie – seeing all these beautiful books in one post has made me feel a little better about the fact that I went book buying crazy this month. SO MANY PRE-ORDERS, y’all. And then, you know, lots of unplanned purchases that I couldn’t resist… and I can’t even blame it on attending any signings.

Also, I just grabbed Pointe from the library this week per E’s rec. Hope I get to it before it’s due back!

April 24, 2014 - 12:38 pm

Ginger @ GReads! - Look at all those beautiful books! I’m jealous, Estelle, that you got to attend Jenny Han’s pub party. From the pics I saw, it looked like such a good time! Also, that comment about her sister & christmas morning.. COMPLETELY agree with that. Magan, I want updates when you read Corey’s book!

PS, Teen Book Con is this weekend, so I’m sure I’ll have a post similar to this one sometime next week with all my book purchases! Can’t wait!

April 23, 2014 - 12:20 pm

Quinn @ Quinn's Book Nook - I don’t think you guys picked up too many books at all. Of course, I might not be the best person to ask that question 🙂

That’s awesome that there were so many book events last week, Estelle. Magan, I haven’t read Unremembered, but it’s definitely on my list. I got to see Jessica Brody at the Rochester Teen Book Fest last year, and she was a fun speaker.

Enjoy all your goodies and happy reading! 🙂

Nailed It: Hollywood Edition

Welcome welcome welcome to an absolutely fun week at Rather Be Reading Blog! We’ll be hosting an entire Hollywood Week, inspired by the Starstruck young adult series by Rachel Shukert. Alexa S. - I’ve got to say, I’m REALLY excited about this week of posts! I love the nail colors you’ve picked out — they’re so bright and colorful and just get me all excited to do my nails 😉

March 2, 2014 - 4:22 pm

Cassie G - I loved Starstruck but haven’t started book 2 yet! I have it on my NetGalley though, so I’m very excited to start it!

AND I just started Reality Boy this week, so I loved that pick! The colors are excellent and now I just want them all!

March 2, 2014 - 2:40 pm

Sara (of The Page Sage) - I love the cover of Reality Boy and your choices for the nail polishes are perfect!

March 2, 2014 - 10:38 am

Annie - This is so cool! I still have yet to read Starstruck but I will definitely. I love books set in the thirties and the fact that it’s also in Hollywood makes it even better! I don’t think the yellow would look good on my nails either but I really love the turquoise. I also must try black and gray – I don’t usually wear darker colours but it’d be good to experiment a little!

We’re Celebrating Our Friendiversary!

It’s true that you never know where you are going to meet the love of your life. Or in this case, one of your best friends. Three years ago, this week Magan was on her way to “work” at a wedding in Austin and Estelle was putting on a mint green dress to watch one […]

Brittany @ The Book Addict's Guide - Awwww you guys are so cute! I love that you’re celebrating your friendiversary!!
I can’t wait to read Past Perfect even more now! Maybe I should start that one soon….

March 1, 2014 - 2:57 pm

Maggie @ Just a Couple More Pages - Happy anniversary, ladies! Great choices for female friendships, I loved all of these. And I agree that we need more in YA!

February 28, 2014 - 11:21 am

Lucy - Hooray for friendiversary’s! Yay for bonding over books and starting RBR! I like a good friendship book and you’ve listed some of my favorites in this post. Especially Maggie & Roux, and Cath & Reagan 🙂

February 28, 2014 - 8:52 am

Ginger @ GReads! - Aw I love this post! Happy Friendiversary!!

February 27, 2014 - 7:50 pm

Alexa S. - You guys! I’m still so very happy that you met, became BFFs and started Rather Be Reading. You guys are such an inspiring pair, the type of friendship I love seeing in books or in real life. The friendships you’ve chosen (I’ve read 3 out of 4!) are brilliant for the reasons you’ve mentioned here — all necessary in real, true friendship. I’m honored to be able to call you both my friends as well, and want to squishy hug you both <3

February 27, 2014 - 7:41 pm

Sash + Em - Friendship + Blog = The Best.

February 27, 2014 - 6:08 pm

Leah - I should not have read this while sitting by the window! Anyone driving by will probably think I’m a complete nut for grinning so hard. Your story AND you two are absolutely adorable!

Although we lost touch over the years, I met my best friend through Harry Potter message boards on AOL back in the day. 🙂 For years we’d chat online and send letters and finally, in 2008, we had the chance to meet in person (at a HP convention obvs). I’m a total believer that a best friend might be right behind you in line at the grocery store or sitting across from you on the bus. Like Jamie, I’m all for chatting up strangers – and, luckily, I get to do that at work!

February 27, 2014 - 5:21 pm

Victoria (aka Zemfirka) - Happy friendiversary ladies!!! 🙂

February 27, 2014 - 12:47 pm

Jen Ellision - Awww, I love this! Incidentally, the beginning of this post reminds me of one of my favorite quotes/female friendships from Code Name Verity: “It’s like being in love, discovering your best friend.”

February 27, 2014 - 8:51 am

Christina @ Allodoxophobia - Happy anniversary! I love this post! If Melissa and I wrote one, we’d be celebrating 29 years as friends this coming summer. So important to celebrate friendship 🙂 My favorite group of friends might be The Raven Boys + Blue. They support and antagonize each other in all kinds of interesting ways.

February 27, 2014 - 8:37 am

Andi - I love this! What a cute story on how you met! Really it is amazing how the littlest things can bring two people together as friends and I love that you two are proof of that.
Happy Friendiversary!

February 27, 2014 - 8:12 am

Jamie - I still love your “how you met” story! This is why I am PRO talking to strangers about books 😛

Love the picks I’ve read (Fangirl, Also Known As and WSW) and so agree with the friendships! Gotta read Past Perfect!

How lucky you are to have each other in life and with this blog! This post made me think fondly about the two best friends in my life from middle school/HS and then HS/college. I’m only close with one of them at this point, and not even bffs really, but I loved thinking about HOW I met them and how important they were to my life and how I grew as a person. It’s harder for me as an adult to find a close friend like that these because everyone is just in such different places in life but I still hope to find my adulthood peanut butter to my jelly. It’s funny when I think about it though how my sister has really become that person since the day she told me she was pregnant with Genevieve.

ANYWHO now I’m all nostalgic and I apologize for doing it all over your comment box haha. I’m happy that 3 years ago you got your book nerd on as strangers because, if not, you both wouldn’t be in my life…and that would be sad because you guys have definitely had an impact on my life!
