Hollywood Week: Meeting the Star a.k.a Author

Greetings! Honest truth: I always forget to do recaps of author events on Rather Be Reading. It’s so so terrible of me because I’ve gone to some great ones and never seem to get them written in time. But by a huge stroke of luck, Starstuck and Love Me author Rachel Shukert was in town […]

Alexa S. - I wish I’d known about this event, as it sounds great! Rachel seems awesome, and I love that she’s got that much of a connection with Jeremy Jordan 😉 So glad you were able to meet her!

March 10, 2014 - 4:02 pm

Maggie @ Just a Couple More Pages - I assume that’s your really cool looking Benz parked in front of McNally Jackson that will ferry me from the NYPL down to SoHo in a few weeks?

Is it weird I didn’t know there was an upstairs to McNally Jackson? I’ve been downstairs, but I can’t even picture how to get upstairs.

Sorry, would you like me to leave you a comment related to this post? I love the tidbits you learned during the Q&A and the Muppet that she drew for you, that is very cool.

March 9, 2014 - 9:36 pm

Christina @ My Life In Books - I absolutely love, love, LOVE McNally Jackson – I even got to meet Sarah McNally through a class in college! The layout in that bookstore is so organic and welcoming at the same time. Wish I was still in the city to visit 🙂

March 8, 2014 - 12:15 pm

alice-jane - AHHHH this looks like it was loads of fun! It’s cool that she personalized your book (Kermit!) and her extensive knowledge of Hollywood culture and the Oscars. I definitely have to read her books now!

Are You There, Readers? It’s Tiger Eyes.

I absolutely adore Twitter. I love it most when it’s one of those right place, right time situations and I see a tweet about an event happening in New York City. One of the latest examples was seeing a preview of Tiger Eyes at The JCC on April 25. Tiger Eyes is the first full-length film from […]

Alexa Y. - This is one Judy Blume title I’ve never read, but after reading your thoughts, I really want to! The poster for the movie and the trailer also make me extra excited to see it. I love that Judy Blume was so incredible to her fans! <3

June 10, 2013 - 3:34 pm

Ghenet Myrthil - I went to the NYC premiere on Friday night (which was also followed by a Q&A with Judy and Lawrence, as well as Amy Jo Johnson!) and I thought the movie was fantastic. I was also starstruck by Judy and thought she was wonderful during the Q&A. It was definitely an exciting evening!

June 9, 2013 - 9:25 pm

tabithasbookblog - I’m so excited for this one!! I haven’t actually read the book, but I’d definitely be interested in doing so in the future! And the trailer! AH – and that song? I’m obsessed!!

June 7, 2013 - 1:11 pm

Lucy - Ooh I’m going to look for this on demand! What an incredible experience that you got to attend the screening with Judy Blume herself! She is the author that got me into reading so Judy Blume will always have a special place in my heart.
It is incredible that this is her first film adaptation! Thanks for telling us about this one 🙂

June 7, 2013 - 11:54 am

Rachel @ hello, chelly - I never heard of the book or the movie until you mentioned it. But now I definitely want to read and see it! Based on the trailer alone, I have a feeling I’ll end up crying a lot too haha.

June 7, 2013 - 1:25 am

Melissa @ Writer Grrl Reads - Wow — I had no idea this movie was even in the works. In this day and age where almost every movie is based on a book, you really have to applaud Judy Blume for keeping her stories out of the theatres until she felt that it was right. And to embark on this journey with her son? I teared up too!

BEAPart of It/New York, NY: Spirits + Caffeine

In a span of five days, you have heard about food, bookstores, food trucks, and expo advice for your upcoming jaunt to New York City for the BEAExpo. Now it’s FRIDAY. molly @ wrapped up in books - Great list! I loved the wine bar recommendations and was thrilled to find one with a vegetarian menu!

April 21, 2013 - 10:33 pm

Alexa Y. - You know, growing up, I was raised to believe that I was going to be a mixed drinks kind of girl when I started drinking alcohol. But since moving the US and trying out beers, I’ve found I’m hooked. I’m now that girl who will probably have a beer in hand in lieu of a mixed drink or some wine lol. Just putting that out there 😉

Great suggestions! I have to try Beer Authority sometime 🙂

April 20, 2013 - 9:03 am

Brittany @ The Book Addict's Guide - Oh girl, I looooove craft beer. When we visit Colorado, we make a point of visiting the local craft breweries. Now I just need to find someone to go with me to these wonderful places you’ve mentioned because my friends are not beer drinkers! Haha.

April 19, 2013 - 11:00 pm

elena - you make me want to drink craft beer. </3

Tara - So… which one of these are we going to go to when I visit?? 🙂

Tahereh Mafi and Veronica Rossi at Book People: Austin, TX

For months, I was so excited to see Tahereh Mafi and Veronica Rossi at Book People. If I had one of those big desk calendars (instead of being all technological with my online gmail calendar), I would have circled April 26th with big, happy hearts. These two ladies are extraordinary authors. Tahereh is the […]

May 17, 2012 - 8:38 pm

Melissa @ Writer Grrl Reads - Awww — it looks like you had SO MUCH FUN! I’ve just started reading Shatter Me (I know, I know … so behind with all the bestest books!) and I am LOVING it. She has such a way with words that I want to copy down every second sentence into my book of favourite book quotes!!

May 17, 2012 - 6:31 pm

Alexa @ Alexa Loves Books - This sounds like it was one amazing event! I’d definitely want to be a part of it next year, if I can. Sharing books with people is always an amazing thing to me – especially when you can share them with people who don’t have the same access that you do.

May 3, 2012 - 11:10 pm

elena - aw love the way you formatted this post! It sounds like a lot of fun and spreading the love of reading is always great. 😀

TLA Recap + Library Conference Tips for Book Bloggers

Sharon @ Fictionally Inclined - Love the pictures! It’s so amazing that you got to meet Jessi Kirby and Veronica Roth.

This was such a great post. I haven’t been to a book conference/event like this (yet!), but I’ll be sure to keep these tips in mind! Thanks. 🙂

April 27, 2012 - 5:34 am

VeganYANerds - Great post, Magan! I love all of the photos of you with the authors you met, you look so happy, I bet it was a lot of fun!

And your offer some great tips for other bloggers going to these type of events!

April 26, 2012 - 5:52 pm

Jess @ Gone with the Words - Love this post so. much. 🙂 Fantastic tips, Magan!! It was so awesome hanging out with you, and I hope to get to do it again soon!

April 26, 2012 - 11:47 am

Katy Manck (BooksYALove) - Great post, Magan! As a long-time TLA member, recently-retired school librarian, and first-year book blogger, I appreciate knowing that bloggers & librarians understand their relationship with publishers & with authors.

It’s win-win-win as long as we all get the right book into the hands of the right reader, whether it’s through a blog post, a book talk at the library, or an author signing at a bookstore.

Let’s continue to be professional and upbeat in this together (and show folks that the stinkers who put ARCs up on eBay right after ALA Midwinter are the minority that we’re trying to re-educate).

Happy reading, happy blogging, happy people!

margie c {the bumble girl} - Oh, Magan! How thoughtful of you to share all of this with us! I will be driving in for BEA this year, my first time! Unfortunately, I am only able to go in for ONE day! and I have been so very nervous as to what I should wear, what to expect and where to go. Mostly I’m hoping to meet other book bloggers 🙂
These tips are so very helpful, thank you so much!

April 26, 2012 - 11:02 am

Magan - Elena! You should definitely go to a conference! They’re a ton of fun and the networking is unbelievable. I’ve met some INCREDIBLE people at the conferences. Regarding the whole ‘look like a teenager thing’ – it really boils down to professionalism. I met some teenagers at TLA that acted more grown up than the adults did. It’s all in how you present yourself. Come to ALA in June, please? I want to meet you!!!

April 26, 2012 - 10:58 am

elena - Ahh Magan, this post is SO helpful and perfect! I’ve thought about attending a book conference before but haven’t made the plunge yet since it requires plane tickets & hotels. I really want to go to one when I’m more comfortable with blogging but wasn’t sure about them in general. Your tips are fantastic, definitely bookmarking for if I ever go in the future. 🙂 Unfortunately, the “don’t look like a teen” thing can’t apply to me because I still get asked if I would like the children’s menu in restaurants…sigh.

I also really love all the pictures you shared! I wonder what made you blush and you look lovely in all of them!

April 26, 2012 - 10:58 am

Magan - Thanks, Anna! 🙂 xoxo

April 26, 2012 - 10:57 am

Anna - Love this. All of this.

April 26, 2012 - 10:50 am

Magan - Haha, April! I try. So hard. I just want to raise up the book blogging community and we’ll do that by acting professional. Sometimes we get a bad rep for people who just want to take. I think it’s about figuring out what we can give back, ya know?

Thanks, love! 🙂

April 26, 2012 - 10:45 am

Magan - Ginger, I’m going to cry… it was so, so awesome for me, too! I MISS YOU! I wish we could rewind and do the whole day all over again. Cannot wait for the next time we get to hang out! Love you, lady! xoxo

April 26, 2012 - 10:44 am

April Books & Wine - You are so profesh, I LOVE IT. And I am glad to know I associate with people like you.

Solid tips lady, solid tips.

Also the pic with Ginger? Too cute for words!

April 26, 2012 - 10:36 am

Ginger @ GReads! - Wow! Your tips are so spot on. I will definitely be sharing this post with others 🙂 You did a fabulous job of highlighting some very important things to consider when attending a book event like TLA.

Oh man, I had SO MUCH FUN with you!!! That day is probably one of my most favorite book moments to date 🙂 thank you for making it special! Love you!!!
