Sweet Summertime Reads | Oh, the Places We Would Go (in NY + TX)…

Welcome back for this week’s Sweet Summertime Reads post! This week we’re discussing road trips. Yesterday Ginger shared her desire to road trip along the California Pacific Coast Highway. (Sidenote: Five years ago, Magan called San Diego home and Ginger’s post made her extremely nostalgic. Friends, if you ever have the chance to drive with […]

emery lord - I’ve been in NYC once a season for the past year…and I will take bitter cold over a city summer ANY DAY. I’m planning my first-ever trip to Austin in the fall. Can’t wait for that one!

July 23, 2013 - 10:27 am

Asheley Tart (@BookwormAsheley) - Estelle: Next time I go to NYC, take me to these places! It was recommended to me on the day before I left NYC to go to the High Line, but I didn’t want to go by myself since I didn’t understand the directions that were given to me but your picture is so neat! Honestly I’d go anywhere you’d take me. You’re a FANTASTIC host for your city and I love the way your love for it makes me love it. MEANS A LOT. xo Magan: Here’s a dorky secret. For about three or four years, I had a subscription to Southern Living magazine (it just ended, sad face) and they ALWAYS feature Texas, and most of the time it seems like they have fantastic Austin nightlife or places to visit in it. And I’ve ALWAYS wanted to go there. ALWAYS. Music, sights, food, all of that. One day, and you can be my tour guide. Seriously. I love this post.

July 21, 2013 - 9:44 pm

Alexa Y. - Girls, this is a WONDERFUL post! I really, really want to go to all the places Magan mentioned in Austin (and seriously, I may just have to make it happen in the future). They look absolutely GORGEOUS, and that BBQ place sounds delicious indeed! As for NY, I’ve been to Serendipity multiple times and LOVED it, and the same goes for the High Line which is especially gorgeous when the sun sets! I have, however, not been to Coney Island and I really think that ought to be remedied…

Sweet Summertime Reads: My Dream Road Trip | Fiction Folio - […] road trip week for Sweet Summertime Reads!  Ginger and Estelle and Magan shared their road trips with you earlier this week, and today I’m going to share my somewhat […]

July 16, 2013 - 8:44 pm

Melissa's Eclectic Bookshelf - Gosh what gorgeous pictures! Love love love love this post of yours…so pretty!

July 16, 2013 - 5:24 pm

Sarah B. - SALT LICK! YES! So, so, so good & totally worth the drive out of town for the original!

July 16, 2013 - 3:23 pm

Amanda @ Hell-Bent to Read - Magan, I didn’t realize you lived in Austin! I have only been once (I live in Dallas), and I loved it, but I want to make it a thing to go down a couple times a year. Also, do you plan on going to the Austin Teen Book Festival in September?

Ah, Estelle. I have been to New York once, and it was only for a day. How sad! I really want to go back and spend a week or so there.

July 16, 2013 - 10:32 am

Cassie - OH MY GOODNESS. Magan, ummm those places are BEAUTIFUL! And Estelle, I now want to go to Coney Island! Wonderful and creative post, ladies!

PS- can we sneak me in the suitcase?? I’m little!

July 16, 2013 - 9:36 am

Katie - I love that you girls will be united shortly! You must be so excited 🙂 Hopefully I finally get to meet you Estelle! Oh, and I LOVE High Line!

July 16, 2013 - 8:35 am

Ginger @ GReads! - Love love love this post! I’ve actually been to both places (Austin too many times to count since it’s right in my backyard + only once to NYC!) Salt Lick is a must when visiting Austin. Mmm their BBQ is delicious. I tried to go to Serendipity when I was in NYC, but the wait was ridiculously long & we were on a time crunch. So I just checked out the gift shop & looked around the restaurant. Very cute.

Sweet Summertime Reads: Setting the Scene (Jennifer E. Smith)

Note from Estelle: I am not ashamed to call myself a Jennifer E. Smith cheerleader. Since I read through all of her books last year, Jennifer has easily become one of my go-to authors. This year, she released a sweet story called THIS IS WHAT HAPPY LOOKS LIKE about every girl’s dream: falling for and […]

Kristilyn (Reading in Winter) - I love this! It’s great to see the setting that’s in a favourite book of mine. 🙂 I loved This is What Happy Looks Like!

July 9, 2013 - 2:29 pm

Tara - I love that Jennifer took pieces of different places to create the setting for Happy. Setting is so important to me when I read a story and I can’t wait to see these places meld together. I still need to read Happy and I think it’s going to have to happen before summer ends!

July 9, 2013 - 1:30 pm

Alexa Y. - I adore this post! I absolutely love Jennifer’s books, at least the ones I’ve read so far (and I think that’s everything except the MG one and Comeback Season). The setting of This is What Happy Looks Like was one of my favorite things about the book, so it’s pretty fascinating to hear the story of how it all came together!

July 9, 2013 - 10:19 am

Asheley Tart (@BookwormAsheley) - What a great post! First of all, and most importantly, I didn’t realize that Jennifer E Smith had written more than Happy and Probability!! (Bad me!) BUT hooray for finding new books! So I’ve made some notes and I never would’ve realized probably had I not seen this post so THANK YOU, ladies! Second of all: SETTING. I just love a great setting so much, and I love reading this. Now when I grab This Is What Happy Looks Like, this will resonate with me as I read. So thank you again, ladies! E, you know that I love books set around the water/sea and this sounds like it needs to be moved up on my to-read list. Doggone it, E. You do this to me every time. ALSO You Are Here sounds like it might be an Asheley book??? Thoughts? LOVE THIS POST.

July 9, 2013 - 10:13 am

Lena @ Addicted 2 Novels - I’m also a cheerleader for JES. Much like the title of her latest novel, her books make me happy inside. Is this what happy feels like? I think soooooo!

This guest post just makes me want to visit Montauk, find an ice cream shop and taste all the flavors of summer.

July 9, 2013 - 10:05 am

Jamie - I didn’t mention this in my review (and DUH I should have) but the sense of setting in this book was REALLY awesome and having been to Maine one summer I thought she nailed it and it really made me want to go back tbh!

I also loved the part about writing setting because, as you know, I’m starting out on my own little writing journey and that paragraph made a lot of sense to me. Bookmarking it for further use!

July 9, 2013 - 9:16 am

Ginger @ GReads! - Such inspirational words! I’m a huge fan of settings, both in what I read & what I write. I completely agree that it’s best to take pieces from personal places you’ve experienced & piece them together to create something new. It definitely fulfills the story and creates a richer atmosphere.

I still need to read Happy. It’s on my TBR list. I’m thinking this should happen before summer ends. Great post!

July 9, 2013 - 9:08 am

Bookworm1858 - Agree that the setting for HAPPY felt very summery. Though I’ve never visited Maine, it really evoked a strong sense of place for me and made me eager to give it a visit!

Sweet Summertime Reads: A Fourth of July First Date

I have a few favorite Fourth of July scenes in books (most vivid: Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson — *swoon*). This week we’re sharing excerpts of those such scenes for Sweet Summertime Reads. I decided this might be the perfect opportunity to share a book I recently read, Fifteenth Summer by Michelle Dalton, with you. It’s about first […]

July 3, 2013 - 9:07 pm

Alexa Y. - I’ve literally fallen in love with these characters already based on this one scene. It’s SO GOOD. And I love that they talk about figuring each other out, and how they seem to be so in love. What a lovely excerpt!

July 3, 2013 - 2:39 pm

Asheley Tart (@BookwormAsheley) - Oh my gracious, what a great excerpt!! It makes me want to read that book RIGHT NOW. So sweet.

July 3, 2013 - 12:01 pm

Tara - I haven’t read this book but am loving the excerpt!! *runs to library website*

July 3, 2013 - 10:01 am

Rachel @ hello, chelly. - The excerpts you chose make me want to pick up the book ASAP. It’s sounds like a great, romantic summer read!

July 3, 2013 - 8:57 am

Bookworm1858 - Cute-love the idea of a July 4th first date as a big fan of fireworks, patriotism, and all that jazz!

July 3, 2013 - 8:42 am

Ginger @ GReads! - What is it about fireworks that are so romantic?! sheesh I love it! Thanks for sharing this excerpt, Magan 🙂

July 3, 2013 - 8:42 am

Hazel - That was absolutely sweet!!! I’ve read Dalton’s Sixteenth Summer but have yet to read this one. 🙂

Sweet Summertime Reads: Fourth of July in Nantucket Blue

There’s only one time I’ve spent Fourth of July somewhere other than home or at the park, watching the fireworks on a blanket. It was a few weeks after I got engaged, we were on a short vacation with my now husband’s parents, and we built a fire on the beach and watched the fireworks […]

Tara - Girl, you had me at stolen champagne 🙂

July 2, 2013 - 3:17 pm

Emma @ Hopeful Happiness - I completely agree with you about the fourth of July. I think it’s the fireworks that make it so romantic! I loved that scene in NB and I love when they make it to their destination. That little old lady had some oomph! haha

I’m beyond excited that there will be a second book! I for one have not had enough of Cricket’s adventures!

July 2, 2013 - 1:38 pm

Alexa Y. - I loved this scene! It’s really cute, and it’s the kind of Fourth of July I would like to have myself 🙂

July 2, 2013 - 12:37 pm

Brittany @ The Book Addict's Guide - BUTTERFLIES.
I love that scene. And this book. YAYYYY

July 2, 2013 - 11:22 am

Ginger @ GReads! - I really liked this scene in NB 🙂 gosh I loved the setting for this story so, so much. She did a phenomenal job of placing you inside the story — I mean, I’ve never even been to Nantucket, yet I felt like I could picture it all so well.

Your 4th of July spent on the beach with a bonfire while fireworks went off in the distance sounds DIVINE. I think the 4th can be romantic, too 🙂 I mean HELLO! look at the books we chose, hehe.

July 2, 2013 - 11:08 am

Hazel - I still haven’t read Nantucket Blue but I really want to. I’m still debating whether to stick to an ebook or get an actual copy. Would the latter be worth it? 🙂

July 2, 2013 - 10:05 am

Asheley Tart (@BookwormAsheley) - Okay, see this post makes this book sound really great PLUS I love the cover. I think I messed myself up because I read a couple of reviews of it early on in which the readers didn’t like the book for reasons I can’t even remember. But you mention beach read, forbidden romance – these things I LOVE. So doggone it, I want to read it now. Thanks, E!

July 2, 2013 - 9:14 am

Bookworm1858 - There’s going to be a second book? I don’t usually like sequels to contemporaries but if this will help mend the relationship between Cricket and Jude, I would be very happy!

Sweet Summertime Reads: The Nautical and The Sexy

Nothing says summer like SHOPPING. Especially when you are us. So today we decided to pair both reading and shopping for a fun little feature. This year, better than most, we have kind of done a nice job of making sure we read the books the other can’t stop raving about. (Yes, we are patting […]

Alexa Y. - You guys are making it VERY difficult indeed for me to keep my shopping ban! The items in this post – the skirts, bikini + dress – are SUPER cute. And I’m excited to read both these books!

June 26, 2013 - 5:37 am

VeganYANerds - Loving the skirts and the bikini! Estelle – so glad you got Winger!

June 25, 2013 - 7:07 pm

Cee @ The Novel Hermit - Eek! Such fabulous choices. I am in love with the red skirt.

You convinced me to read “Winger.” 😀

June 25, 2013 - 12:47 pm

Aneeqah @ My Not So Real Life - Ahh, this is such an adorable feature! I love how you two are focusing on reading books that the other loved- so cute! The outfits you two chose are so adorable as well. I’m loving the read and blue look, Estelle, and Magan, that cover-up’s color is SO cute. Probably my favorite shade of blue (if you couldn’t tell from my blog, haha). 😉 Lovely picks, you two! <3

-Aneeqah @ My Not So Real Life

June 25, 2013 - 11:17 am

Candice @ The Grown-Up YA - I WANT THOSE SKIRTS!!! They would look so good for my work wardrobe. 🙂

Also… I’m gonna go with Brittany. No way the bikini would work for me. The cover up though? Yes please! Love that color!

June 25, 2013 - 11:01 am

Tara - Those skirts are adorbs! And boy do I wish I had the body to pull off that bathing suit…

June 25, 2013 - 11:00 am

Rachel - If I didn’t love shopping so much I’d hire you two to shop for me. First off, I love what you chose for Winger, Estelle. I don’t know anything about the book but it does fit well with the cover! And also 90% of my clothing is either red, white, or blue, so I think your choices are perfect. Magan, your choices for Dangerous Girls are perfect as well. I haven’t read it yet either (but I want too!), but I definitely pictured the same kind of clothing. That swimsuit is SO CUTE. I don’t know if I’d ever actually wear a white bikini (I prefer black or pink), but I do like to admire them from afar.

June 25, 2013 - 10:59 am

Jamie - I want to read both of these so bad!! Perfect pairings, too!

June 25, 2013 - 9:47 am

Sharon @ The Book Barbies - These are such cute choices! That nautical skirt is ADORABLE. And I love that swimsuit! Not at all practical – it’d be down around my waste in no time if I actually got in the water, LOL – but very pretty nonetheless.

June 25, 2013 - 9:37 am

Cassie - OMFG. STOP IT JUST STOP. This is so creative and adorable and I effing LOVE IT.

June 25, 2013 - 9:32 am

Ginger @ GReads! - This is so cute! Love this post idea 🙂 I really, really love skirts in the summertime. They are definitely a part of my wardrobe right now. I wish I had a bikini body, haha so it’s full body swimsuits for me! Ha!

June 25, 2013 - 9:27 am

Brittany @ The Book Addict's Guide - Those nautical skirts are CUTE. Love them.
Uhh, darn, no model body included? haha. Yeah, I can’t pull off a bikini like that but I love the cover up! 🙂

Sweet Summertime Reads: Beach Bags Galore!

Hello, hot hot summer! Yesterday Ginger at GReads! shared what’s in her beach bag. Today we’re doing the same. Quite frankly, we’re longing for days at the beach to escape work and day-to-day life busyness. Oh, to smell like sunscreen while spending a long day with sand collecting between your toes… Magan: I’m a terrible […]

Melissa's Eclectic Bookshelf - Love all of your picks! And I’ve Got Your Number is a great Summer read!! So fun!

June 19, 2013 - 3:11 pm

Alexa Y. - This post is SO ADORABLE. You girls make me want to pack up and head on over to the beach! (I haven’t been yet since the weather got warmer. That’s gotta change.) I love both pairs of sandals, the striped backpack and that AWESOME picnic basket!

June 19, 2013 - 12:11 pm

Rachel - Estelle, your picks totally scream you and I love it. I can so see you with that beach bag. Magan, those sandals are THE CUTEST and also I love that towel and the tote bag. You should be my personal shopper or something. My beach bag is always filled with lots of food, summery books, and ALL THE WATER because I am a very big water drinker.

June 19, 2013 - 4:38 am

Maggie, Young Adult Anonymous - I love this feature! Magan, love love love the sandals and the backpack. And you can’t go wrong with Sophie Kinsella. Estelle, that basket and sandals!! I’ve never shopped at ModCloth before. You guys are going to be the death of my bank account!! I have the Fuji Instax Mini 25 and I love it. 🙂

June 18, 2013 - 11:00 pm

Cassie - SUCH CUTE BAGS GUYS! E- the sunset nights theme? ADORABLE. May have to steal the idea 😉 M- I still never read Sophie Kinsella, so sounds like summer would be perfect time to start!

Love these posts ladies! <3

June 18, 2013 - 10:21 pm

Courtney @ Courtney Reads A Lot - I would love to just go to the beach tomorrow instead of work. I love the ocean and smelling like sunscreen. I love your beach bags! Those sunglasses and sandals are too cute! I also pack way too much. I would have chapstick, a hair brush (my hair wet is not a pretty picture) and then pretty much what you girls have. 😀 Great post!

June 18, 2013 - 8:47 pm

Lauren @ Love is not a triangle - This is the greatest post! Graphically and content wise. I’m always overpacking too. Plus I have kids so that’s triple the stuff. But I ALWAYS have a book and a snack and sunglasses. LOVE that camera so much and I’ve Got YOur Number is a great Kinsella. She’s my go-to summer author. Can you keep a secret is my FAVE.

June 18, 2013 - 5:39 pm

Tara - LOL Magan you are an overpacker just like me! You never know what you *might* need. Estelle, that picnic basket is so pretty…and costs more than 20 of my beach bags combined haha. I will have to admire from afar :/

June 18, 2013 - 3:04 pm

Jess, Books and Sensibility - There are so pretty ! You both picked great summer reads.

June 18, 2013 - 1:21 pm

Jessie - That Kate Spade picnic basket is AMAZING

June 18, 2013 - 9:03 am

Bookworm1858 - Right now I’m reading Antigoddess so if I don’t finish it by the weekend, that’s what I’ll be dragging along. I’m in California really close to the beach but I rarely go-hoping to change that this summer!

June 18, 2013 - 8:58 am

Ginger @ GReads! - Cute! Cute! Cute! What’s inside Magan’s beach bag looks totally like her 🙂 I can see her rockin’ those shades with that hat.. and of course those sandals! Estelle, I remember seeing your “after work, at the beach” photos last summer. I may miss it as much as you, ha.

June 18, 2013 - 8:56 am

Brittany @ the Book Addict's Guide - Super cute, ladies!!! I’m like Magan. I’m an overpacker! Surprisingly it wasn’t too terrible for BEA but usually I bring WAY more clothes/books than I need to because I just never know what I’ll be in the mood for! Haha 🙂

June 18, 2013 - 8:41 am

Lisa - I’ll take Magan’s backpack and Estelle’s sandals, thanks! Also loooove the summer reading choices.
