Melissa @ Writer Grrl Reads - Awesome list! Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants will always be one of my favourite summer reads, as I read the first one when I worked at a summer camp in upstate New York. It was the perfect summer weather read, curled up in an Adirondack chair on my down time.

And I’m super surprised that there’s no Morgan Matson in there?!? Magan actually passed up the chance to plug Second Chance Summer? Tee hee =)

June 12, 2012 - 6:15 pm

Alexa @ Alexa Loves Books - Sorority Sisters definitely sounds like something I’d read. I love stories of friendship, and I love it when the set of friends comes in a group of 4 because it makes me think of my own group of friends.

When in Doubt, Add Butter also sounds… delicious. Yes, I had to go there. I’d love to read this one!

June 10, 2012 - 12:10 pm

Estelle - I agree. I never think about it but the psychological part of books can be very addictive and it is here! Hope you enjoy the book!

June 7, 2012 - 11:24 pm

ShootingStarsMag - Thanks for sharing. I think Inside sounds like an awesome book too. I don’t know how many stores I’ve read about therapists, but they do interest me. Anything to do with psychology, I tend to find fascinating.

June 7, 2012 - 5:08 pm

VeganYANerds - I love the cover of Inside, it’s gorgeous! Almost all of these appeal to me, and like you, I don’t mind reading cheating stories, because it happens all the time in real life and this one sounds like it’s about an interesting family too.

Alexa @ Alexa Loves Books - If the guy who was going to be my future step-brother looked like Zac Efron, I honestly don’t know how I’d be able to resist… especially with those eyes!

This book sounds interesting, though I’m not sure I’d read it right away. I don’t know what makes me so hesitant about it, but I just feel like I don’t need to read this one right now, if you catch my drift.

June 6, 2012 - 6:16 pm

Ginger @ GReads! - I struggled with the closure on this one, too. I don’t think it all could have been figured out by the last page, there was just TOO MUCH going on, but I felt some points should have been given a direction.

Holy hell at Zefron!!! He is a perfect choice of Nathan πŸ˜‰

June 6, 2012 - 5:02 pm

elena - I’ve actually heard the formulaic concern about Kody Keplinger’s writing too. I haven’t read THE DUFF but I read SHUT OUT which I liked enough, even if I wasn’t the biggest fan. I’m excited for this one because it seems like an interesting premise. I’m glad that even though you couldn’t connect to Whitley, you liked Sylvia and Nathan. It makes really happy to hear Sylvia is an anthesis of an evil stepmother! Thanks for your honest review, Magan. πŸ™‚

June 6, 2012 - 3:27 pm

Natalie @ Mindful Musings - That’s definitely one of the potential downsides of an author who’s writing in the same genre…the tendency for some of the books to become formulaic, like you said.

I’ve heard a lot of good things about Kody Keplinger, especially about The Duff, and I totally need to read at least one of her books!

Tune in Tuesday: Sweet Summertime Sounds

Estelle - I made a tiny squeal when I read you loved Jeremy Jordan. Okay fine, I’ll share him with you.

June 10, 2012 - 12:20 pm

Estelle - Sandra, He is the best. Really. I can’t get enough of him.

June 10, 2012 - 12:11 pm

Estelle - NEWSIES music is the best too! You should look at the new cast album for some summer tunes. Catchy and energetic!

June 7, 2012 - 10:28 pm

LitzaLou - I’m not a fan of country music, but I really do love fun. and Queen! Can I just say that I would LOVE to see Newsies on Broadway?! That has been one of my favorite musicals since I was a kid! LOVE IT!

Thanks for sharing!

June 6, 2012 - 6:20 pm

Ginger @ GReads! - We Are Young is such a summer anthem!! I love it. I wanted to add “Indian Summer” by Benjamin Gibbard to our playlist, but spotify didn’t have it πŸ™ pooey.

June 6, 2012 - 8:49 am

Hemborgwife - I am also totally in love with the song We Are Young like listen to it all the time in love!! It is also on my husbands and I’s summer 2012 playlist!!

June 5, 2012 - 11:59 pm

Sandra - I love both of those Luke Bryan songs. Great picks.

June 5, 2012 - 11:53 pm

Melissa @ Writer Grrl Reads - OMG — I’ve totally heard that song on the radio before, I just didn’t know who sang it. And it gets CRANKED whenever it comes on the air!

June 5, 2012 - 11:48 pm

Melissa @ Writer Grrl Reads - I don’t really know any of these songs (although the Queen song sounds a little familiar). I absolutely love the freeze frame of the guy in the “We are Young” video — it just convinced me to hit play and see what it’s all about.

June 5, 2012 - 6:14 pm

VeganYANerds - Yes, music is such a big part of summer! I’ve stopped listening to the radio here because I’m sick of hearing crappy music so it’s always good to hear suggestions from other people to find new music! I’m going to check out these artists, thanks ladies! <3 Queen!

June 5, 2012 - 1:49 pm

Brittani - I love Luke Bryan! I love country music. I grew up on it. And Magan, I do the same this with We Are Young! I blast that as loud as I can and as often as I can. Lol.

June 5, 2012 - 1:00 pm

BecAlora - OMG! You have “We Are Young” by FUN and also JEREMY JORDAN. I’m absolutely in LOVE with Jeremy Jordan.

Great picks girls.

Here’s MINE

June 5, 2012 - 12:31 pm

Bianca - I love We Are Young by Fun! I already have Summer Love stuck in my head (One of Gingers picks) and now I will probably be singing Under Pressure all day. Love all your picks though πŸ™‚

June 5, 2012 - 11:01 am

elena - I’m not a very big fan of country music but I can see why you like it! Drunk On You sounds like a song my friend would love (she’s a big country fan) and I think I recognise the blonde actress in the video! Also YES to Queen!

Estelle: Sweet Summertime Reads – Retro Throwback

When I was a kid, my library used to have these reading contests every summer. We would have to keep a tally of the books we read and at each different level (determined by the library), we would get a prize. Is it surprising I won almost every year for most books read? (ha) One […]

I still have most of the books, and though I haven’t reread them in a while, they will always have a place in my heart. Stacey was always my favorite, but I identified most with Mary Anne!

Estelle - Andrea, Dawn’s house was the one with the secret passageways and I always loved that detail too! I wonder if your library would carry them. They recently republished a few of them and “updated” them (cell phones, DVDs, etc.) so I bet you could grab a few of those! Thanks for stopping in!

June 10, 2012 - 3:57 pm

Estelle - G, I think Mary Anne & Claudia are the perfect combo of favorite characters. Loyal friend and creative thinker. πŸ™‚ Ditto on the TV show. They need to put those on DVD.

June 10, 2012 - 3:01 pm

Estelle - ha Morgan! I wrote about Babysitters on Board on This Happy Place so I didn’t want to double up. YES. I loved that show too. I watched it all the time. I really want to write something about it soon… hmm… πŸ™‚

June 10, 2012 - 2:59 pm

Estelle - Well, I was actually pretty old when she gave them away so it’s quite understandable even if it is sad.

You should definitely check out the books. I wonder if they ever visited London in the books… they did a lot of traveling! Have fun!

June 10, 2012 - 2:56 pm

Estelle - Abby! That was a character we didn’t get to know well enough. I do remember how cool her curly hair looked on the covers though. Yay for a Dawn girl. There is so much to love about this series, isn’t there?

June 10, 2012 - 2:55 pm

Estelle - Elena, have you tried the California Diaries series? I absolutely loved it.

June 10, 2012 - 2:51 pm

Estelle - Roxanne, you hated Dawn?! I can no longer speak to you. Just kidding. I guess I can deal. haha. I actually wrote a report about Claudia & the Sad Goodbye in elementary school. Mimi was a great character. Yes, you are right about the camp one. I haven’t read that in forever. Perhaps I’ll have to pick it up soon. I do like the cover of that one.

haha! Good for you for doing the baby-sitting!

June 10, 2012 - 12:29 pm

Estelle - M, EATEN BY INSECTS? that’s the saddest thing ever. πŸ™ You should try to recollect a few of our favorites to keep!

June 10, 2012 - 12:28 pm

Estelle - Anna, totally going to have this lengthy convo in person someday! xo

June 10, 2012 - 12:28 pm

Estelle - Sharon, I totally met the actresses from the movie and saw it when it came out. And then watched it many times after it. I remember really liking the music a lot. Thanks for your enthusiasm! It’s amazing to see how much people still love BSC even after the series ended so many years ago. That means something. Claudia was also another one of my favorites. She was very artsy and I always loved to hear about her wild outfits.

June 10, 2012 - 12:22 pm

Estelle - Stacey was just the coolest. I always wanted to be like her. Thx for stopping by Brittani!

June 10, 2012 - 12:18 pm

Estelle - Liz, I’m not sure if I ever read the one with the fire. I’ll have to check if I have it. I was never much into the the Little Sister books… I just missed the girls too much. haha. Thx for commenting!

June 6, 2012 - 9:43 pm

Liz - Love this post! I have been trying to track down my BSC collection, but sadly it looks like my parents may have ditched it too. I want to find some good deals on rebuilding it.

I remember the summer I read The Fire at Mary Anne’s House, I was terrified every night that my house was going to burn down. I loved this series so much, as well as Baby Sitter’s Little Sister. Oh, the memories.

June 6, 2012 - 6:22 pm

Ginger @ GReads! - BSC!!! Oh yes. I remember stealing my sister’s copies from her closet when she wasn’t looking. And of course I remember Dawn!!!

June 5, 2012 - 1:54 pm

Brittani - OMG! I loved reading BSC when I was younger! It was one of my fave series!!! I couldn’t get enough of them! My favorite was Stacey!

June 5, 2012 - 9:02 am

Sharon @ Fictionally Inclined - Oh, BSC! I absolutely adored those books when I was younger! I read the one about their trip to NYC about fifteen times. Claudia was always my favorite.

Haha! Wow, the movie. I rented it from Blockbuster once. I remember liking it, but thinking it totally wasn’t nearly as good as the books.

Random bit of information: I was watching an episode of Jeopardy once when I was 11 or 12. The Final Jeopardy question was: “What popular series started with Kristy’s Great Idea.” I was all, “OH! OH! THE BABYSITTER’S CLUB SERIES BY ANN M. MARTIN.” And NO ONE on the show got it right. I was so proud of myself, LOL. But also completely taken aback that not one of the three on the show knew it.

June 5, 2012 - 6:26 am

Anna - Not that you asked, BUT…if i had to be someone I’d totally be Stacey. I could get into a lengthy discussion of the merits of each girl, but I shall refrain. Ahahaha!

June 4, 2012 - 8:04 pm

VeganYANerds - Loving this post, Estelle! I had all The Babysitters books as well as The Little Sister books too. I think some of mine were given away (grr!) and the rest are looking really old and sad and possibly eaten by insects, so sad.

The video makes me want to watch the movie again!

June 4, 2012 - 6:20 pm

Roxanne - Claudia & Stacey were always my favorites. I couldn’t stand Dawn! I remember the Babysitters On Board book which is what convinced me to go on the Haunted Mansion the first time when I was 11! Even to this day, the part of the Hitch-hiking ghost makes me think of that book. One of my favorite books was Claudia & The Sad Good-bye, where Mimi dies. I don’t know how many time I’ve read that book. 2nd favorite was the Super Special where the girls go to camp (#2, I think?).

Loved that series & always played it with friends. I also became my town’s most active babysitter! :o)

June 4, 2012 - 2:49 pm

Katie @ Blook Girl - Wow. This brings back memories. I was just thinking of The BSB the other day, as I was telling Nick that I had ALL of the books still. My mom was sweet enough to order the whole collection, which arrived 3-4 books at a time every 3 months for a couple of years. I will always adore my mom for doing that πŸ™‚

I think my favorite girl was actually Abby/Abbie, who wasn’t introduced until later in the series. Before her, I’d have to say that Stacey and Dawn were my favorites. And oh! Logan! That boy was dreamy πŸ˜‰

I remember the movie almost word-for-word, including that crazy-cool song the girls made up for Claudia when she had to pass that biology test: “… and into the cerebellum – the brain, the brain – the center of the chain!” Ahahaha! (And boy, wasn’t that Cokie a little witch?)

Thanks for the memories, ladies <3

June 4, 2012 - 2:35 pm

elena - GUUURL I AM ALL OVER THIS! Ahh I am so sorry about your BSC collection being given away. I bought a box of books from Half Price Books awhile ago and it had a good portion of BSC. However, I think it was the spin off with the lil sis which is not NEARLY as great. Claudia Kishi was my favourite! She was always stylin’. Such a good post!

June 4, 2012 - 1:34 pm

ComaCalm - She gave your books away? That’s ridiculous! My partner had the same problem. I don’t see why you shouldn’t be able to keep your books if you’re still reading them but I supposed I grew up in a more relaxed household!

I haven’t actually read any of these books, with a perfectly plausable explanation – I’m English! I am going to see if I can get the first book though, to see if I like it. πŸ˜€

ComaCalm’s Corner =^.^=

June 4, 2012 - 1:33 pm

Morgan - What, no love for Baby-sitters on Board?! They went to Disney World!! My favorite baby-sitter was Dawn, although in retrospect I don’t know why because we’re nothing alike. Maybe because she was from California? I still have a special spot in my heart for the direct-to-video series they used to show on The Disney Channel.

June 4, 2012 - 11:52 am

Andrea @ The Overstuffed Bookcase - I loved The Baby-Sitter’s Club when I was a preteen! That and Sweet Valley Twins. I didn’t read Sweet Valley High back then, but last year, my friend and I wanted to read Sweet Valley Confidential, but we wanted to read Sweet Valley High books first. So I got on eBay and found 32 books for like $36. I read about half of them last year. I think they’re great for nostalgia’s sake but most of the books just really aren’t that high on content. But I’m determined to read all of the ones I bought! Hmm, maybe I could turn it into some kind of flashback feature… πŸ˜‰

But I’d like to reread some of the BSC books someday! Maybe my library will actually have some copies so I won’t have to buy them! I don’t really remember my favorite books, but I do remember loving Mary Anne and Claudia, and I remember loving how some house (I think it was Dawn’s house?) had secret passageways. I always wanted to live in a house with secret passageways!!! πŸ˜‰

June 4, 2012 - 11:45 am

Ghenet Myrthil - I was obsessed with The Babysitter’s Club. OBSESSED. My faves were probably Claudia and Mary Anne.

I had the the movie on VHS and watched it so many times! I also loved the TV show on the Disney Channel. πŸ™‚
