Estelle: We’re Not Talking About Books Q&A

Good morning, friends!  Today I’m answering some questions that Magan sent me a few days ago. I hope you’ve enjoyed this series so far! It’s been so fun to reflect on the past year together and share it with you. (If you misses Magan’s Q&A, here it is!) Just a small thing: MAGAN CAME UP […]

Alexa S. - I really love that you guys did these posts! It’s great to get to know even more about each of you on a personal level. I love hearing about what 2013 has been like for you, E, and I really look forward to our friendship growing and more fun hangouts and conversations this 2014! <3

December 30, 2013 - 5:18 pm

Lisa Schensted - GAH I love this feature so much! Thank you for sharing!

And yes, GET TO WRITING. In Moleskines. 🙂

December 29, 2013 - 11:01 am

Bookworm1858 - Love the tips for Disney-we’re leaving on Thursday for a trip to Disney and I can’t wait!!! (I’ve been to Disneyland a couple of times this year but not WDW for 8 years and I miss it!)

December 26, 2013 - 4:38 pm

Quinn @ Quinn's Book Nook - I love these questions, Magan. And I loved seeing what you had to say, Estelle.

First, how cute was that Disney World Wedding Ceremony by Chip and Dale. So cute.

Oh, and can you be my tour guide in Disney World, too, Estelle? I’ve been there quite a few times before (maybe 4 times, I think) but there are always things I miss.

Magan: We’re Not Talking About Books Q&A

Estelle and I are swapping questions and getting into the nitty gritty details… Welcome to our “We’re Not Talking About Books Q&A.” Today I’m answering Estelle’s questions and soon she’ll be answering mine. I haven’t even read her questions yet. I’m just copying and pasting them and writing whatever first comes to mind. Are you […]

Top Ten Tuesday: Let's Talk 2014 Resolutions, Magan - […] guys… I’m worn out. And no, that’s not just the pregnancy talking. I mentioned in my Q&A with Estelle that I’d like to be more welcoming and have people over more often. Maybe these two concepts […]

December 29, 2013 - 10:50 am

Bookworm1858 - Such a fun idea to share more of the personality behind the blog. I’m super late obviously but I look forward to checking out Estelle’s shortly.

Liz - I love reading this interview! Magan, I feel so lucky to have gotten to see how you and your family have changed in 2013. I’m really excited for you to have your baby. And I like how you talk about wanting to let people in more! That’s something I’ve found myself mulling over a great deal this year.

On a lighter note, I also recently got Naked 3 and it’s been a great purchase.

I’m looking forward to seeing what 2014 brings for you!

December 20, 2013 - 7:48 pm

Alexa Y. - I loved reading your answers to E’s questions, M! It’s such a beautiful way to get to know you a little better, and to see how 2013 has changed and shaped you. Even with all your ups and downs, I also know that it’s been a crazy wonderful year for you. I’m honored to know you and be your friend, just because you’re a wonderful person with a genuinely good, caring heart and it shows so clearly how much you value family, friends and life in this post. Love it and love YOU!

December 19, 2013 - 8:58 pm

Melissa @ Writer Grrl Reads - Omigoodness, there are no words for how much I loved reading this! Magan, you made me tear up a few times, especially at the end with baby girl kissing the snowman — too freakin’ cute!

December 19, 2013 - 7:54 pm

Christina - I love the Naked 3 too!

December 19, 2013 - 11:53 am

Lisa Schensted - I would like to second Magan growing into motherhood as an incredible thing to witness and I absolutely adored every moment of it (and will continue to do so).

I love you both to the moon and back!

oxoxoxoxoxo

December 18, 2013 - 9:55 pm

Ellie - I just splurged on the Naked 3 Palette too! So in love with it.

December 18, 2013 - 3:16 pm

Meg - Loved reading this! You ladies are awesome. 🙂 And I love that Florida shot! We don’t have our travel plans locked down for next year, either, but I definitely need to plan a vacation somewhere . . . . this year was consumed by wedding chaos, but all bets are off in 2014!

December 18, 2013 - 3:06 pm

Tiff @ Mostly YA Lit - Love this series. GREAT read – you both seem like such awesome people, it’s wonderful to get to know you better.

Magan, I am the worst about letting people into my home. My husband is great at it and unashamed of our sometimes untidy place, but I feel like the worst hostess when my place looks like crap, so I know what you’re feeling. I’m going to try to be better at it next year, too, because you’re right, bringing a sense of community into your home is important.

On a lighter note, I feel the same sad way about Zefron. Rehab for coke? Yikes. And we definitely need better movies from him…”That Awkward Moment”? REALLY? =p

December 18, 2013 - 9:58 am

alice-jane - I love the new Q&A series that you’re doing! It’s so nice to get to know bloggers not only through what books they like but also through personal posts like this! The iPhone boat picture is gorgeous, too.

All the memories that you’ve shared are so precious and I hope you have a great 2014 as well! 🙂

December 18, 2013 - 9:45 am

Quinn @ Quinn's Book Nook - Wow, Magan, it seems like you’ve had a very busy, but good, year. As for the UD Naked 3 Palette – I just got that as well. It’s so pretty, and I think my favorite of all the Naked Palettes. So good to talk to another makeup addict.

December 18, 2013 - 9:28 am

Ginger @ GReads! - First of all, I LOVE this Q&A thing y’all got started. It’s nice to see personal posts on book blogs (something I am trying to do more of too).

Magan, I love that picture from Florida. I remember admiring your trip while y’all were there through your Instagram pics & thinking, wow! I need to visit this place. Also, that last question about the ornament and your grandmother: PRECIOUS. That’s definitely a keepsake to hold in your heart forever. I agree with Estelle that you’ve definitely evolved into this beautiful, selfless person. You inspire me, constantly.

PS – LOVE that tidbit about the groomsmen asking if your assistant was single, hehe.

All Magan Wants for Christmas Is…

This happened last week. And you know… when Magan tells me to jump, I say how high! Well, kind of. But I can’t allow one of my closest friends to be BORED by her Christmas music. I can’t. I won’t allow it. And since I had so much fun putting together this collection of songs […]

Alexa Y. - You know that I love holiday music! I’m really obsessed with NSYNC’s Christmas album (and have been for years). This year, thanks to your recommendation, I’ve been enjoying listening to Kelly Clarkson’s album too!

December 16, 2013 - 2:22 pm

Meg - It is simply not the holidays without Hanson’s “Snowed In” — and I’m not going to feign embarrassment about it! 🙂 Released in 1997, that baby still finds its way into our speakers every. single. season. Many original songs, some classics. If it’s new to you, try it! I’m biased, but I love it. 🙂

December 16, 2013 - 1:17 pm

Tammy - The Killers release a Christmas song every year. One of my favorites is The Big Sled.

December 16, 2013 - 12:28 pm

alice-jane - I personally love the holiday collection that She & Him (Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward) made. It’s so good!

December 16, 2013 - 9:02 am

Megan Hoover - I’m totally in love with Kelly’s Christmas album too! It’s officially one of my all time favorite Christmas albums.

Not That Kind of Girl Themed Gift-Pack

Not That Kind of Girl is my third book to read of Siobhan Vivian’s. And guess what? I think it’s my favorite so far. It’s exactly what I was needing — something extremely well written with a storyline easy to get into, a main character who I could understand (even if she sometimes made me […]

December 11, 2013 - 9:51 pm

Wendy @ Book Scents - Such a great gift pack! I haven’t read this book but now I really want to! Those movies are also amazing – except I haven’t seen the godfather. (i knoww, i know)

December 11, 2013 - 3:52 pm

Alexa Y. - I am a nerd, and I love EVERYTHING in this post! I really like all the things that you included in this post, because they are things that I would like to own myself. I LOVE IT. (I also feel like I should read this book now.)

December 11, 2013 - 3:20 pm

Lucy - Based on this gift guide I think I would like this book very much! The only book I’ve read by Vivian is the co-written Burn for Burn, so I have some catching up to do. I sure love that free verse duvet, ruler and mason jar tea light holder.

Your Holiday Guide to Gifting Children’s Books

Let’s jump back in time and discuss children’s books. This isn’t something we typically discuss here at Rather Be Reading, but I’m sure there are several of you who will be buying gifts for the children in your lives this holiday season, whether that be nieces and nephews, siblings, or your own babies. We read […]

Rather Be Reading: Magan's Farewell to 2013 - […] is silly, but I really loved recommending children’s books in this holiday shopping guide. I know we’re not a children’s book blog, but the books are still super cute and of […]

December 8, 2013 - 8:29 pm

Lisa Schensted - Love this post! Also, Madeline is currently sitting under the tree for Lucy! Wee!

December 7, 2013 - 2:56 pm

Quinn @ Quinn's Book Nook - I love children’s books! I’m a children’s librarian, so I’ve read hundreds of them. You’re right, some are amazing, and some are not so amazing. I don’t mind if there isn’t a message, though. I mean, I read lots of books where there is no message, and I love those books.

But it’s great when there is more meat to a story too. I love all these books. Doreen Cronin is so much fun. I really love her Diary of a … books too. You should look into them.

Also, I don’t know if you’ve read any Mo Willems, but you should. Your foster daughter will love them (trust me, I haven’t met a child yet who didn’t love the Pigeon books or the Elephant and Piggie series).

Oh, and I love The Napping House. Audrey and Don Wood are great. Have you tried King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub?

December 6, 2013 - 3:27 pm

Alexa Y. - I love that you did a gift guide for children’s books! There are some great titles on here, indeed. Personally, I love gifting Dr. Seuss books and The Berenstein Bears books because that’s what I grew up with! And two other titles I can think of, off the top of my head, are Good Night Moon and I Love You Forever 🙂

December 6, 2013 - 2:54 pm

ashley - Children’s books really are the best. For multiple reasons. My friend recently requested books for Teens and Tweens and I sent her more picture books than I did books for tweens and teens because there is something SO perfect about them.

Your Non-Bookish Holiday To-Do List

Happy December, friends! (Wait. What? How in the world is it already December?!) We’re taking a break from our traditional reviewing this month to bring you a few original posts to break outside our mold, be creative, and celebrate the holidays. Join us, won’t you? First up is our Non-Bookish Holiday To-Do List. Since we’re […]

Alexa Y. - These are some GREAT holiday ideas, girls! I really love celebrating the holiday season as much as I can, and your suggestions are PERFECT. I’m especially excited to (hopefully) watch Frozen this weekend!

December 3, 2013 - 8:00 am

Candice - Fun list! The holidays are always a fun time of year and I love doing all of the things you listed! We’ve got a Christmas light thing at the zoo called Zoolight Safari. I’ve been wanting to go since I was 19 and first heard about it, but I want to go on a date there. 😉

December 2, 2013 - 10:40 pm

Ellie - I love this post! Such perfect suggestions. I’ve been dying to see Frozen! I’m so glad to hear you loved it because now I’m even more excited to see it! Also, I really need some hot chocolate in my life.

December 2, 2013 - 9:59 pm

Lisa - Something about this time of year just makes me feel so dang crafty! The gift tags are a GREAT idea!

Can I just suggest getting your bake on as well? I’ve got peppermint fudge and oreo bark on the docket for this week. YES PLEASE.

December 2, 2013 - 7:12 pm

Rachel - This is such a fun feature/idea! I’m with Magan on the whole holiday lights thing. In the downtown area they do this big lights festival and all the business are decorated and it’s very pretty, so I’m excited to see that again this year. Ice skating is a huge holiday to-do for me. I live near the official Olympic training facility and they allow the public to skate there so that’s where you can find me this winter!

December 2, 2013 - 4:53 pm

Jen @ Pop! Goes The Reader - Sometimes there’s nothing more fun than mixing things up a little and doing something outside of your comfort zone, and as a regular reader of Rather Be Reading I have to tell you how much I appreciated and enjoyed your rather unconventional post today! I’ve heard nothing but wonderful things about Frozen and can hardly wait until I sneak an opportunity to see it myself 😀 As to the rest of your list – Your choices are fantastic! Hot chocolate and Christmas lights can brighten even the dreariest day, and while I don’t have as much time for Christmas crafts as I would like, I try to complete at least one project every year. I find it’s a really great way to decompress and unwind a little.

December 2, 2013 - 2:22 pm

Maggie @ Just a Couple More Pages - I love Christmas lights! One of the few reasons I’m excited to be living in the suburbs again, haha. And hot chocolate, I can’t remember the last time I had hot chocolate!

December 2, 2013 - 1:44 pm

Ginger @ GReads! - Really loving the non traditional posts people are doing around the holidays. I’ll be doing my own on Thursday! Your to-do list looks amazing. I want to see Frozen! But I think my sister took the nephew to see it already. I guess I don’t need a child with me to see it though, right? hehe Love looking at holiday lights, too. We are going to the Houston Zoo this year, where they’ll have a special holiday lights event. I bet the boys will love it! My annual holiday movies that I watch each year are The Holiday and Love Actually. Can’t wait to sit down with some warm, buttery popcorn & watch them!

December 2, 2013 - 9:21 am

Meg - Ah, those post makes me happy! I’m so excited it’s December and definitely pumped to watch some cheesy Christmas movies with hot chocolate in hand. I just may get my Pinterest on, too . . .

December 2, 2013 - 9:10 am

alice-jane - I love this list! Hot chocolate + movies + lights sounds amazing to me. I love holiday DIYs, too, since they’re always so cute and what’s a better way to express your gratitude and love with a handmade gift?
