Nailed It: We’re Back (and It’s Summer!)

Hiya! So we took a little unexpected hiatus from our NAILED IT feature (somehow 3 months has passed) but we’ve still been painting our nails and sharing new colors with each other. (Our latest addiction is the Sinful Colors brand you can pick up at the drugstore. The polish was recently highly rated in Consumer […]

Alexa S. - YAY FOR A NEW NAILED IT! And you both totally nailed it with these cover + polish combos. I’m loving all the bright colors, since I tend to gravitate towards those when the weather is warmer!

Nailed It: Hollywood Edition

Welcome welcome welcome to an absolutely fun week at Rather Be Reading Blog! We’ll be hosting an entire Hollywood Week, inspired by the Starstruck young adult series by Rachel Shukert. Hollywood in the 1930s, three strong (yet flawed) ladies trying to make their marks in showbiz, and all the road blocks that get into their way. […]

Alexa S. - I’ve got to say, I’m REALLY excited about this week of posts! I love the nail colors you’ve picked out — they’re so bright and colorful and just get me all excited to do my nails 😉

March 2, 2014 - 4:22 pm

Cassie G - I loved Starstruck but haven’t started book 2 yet! I have it on my NetGalley though, so I’m very excited to start it!

AND I just started Reality Boy this week, so I loved that pick! The colors are excellent and now I just want them all!

March 2, 2014 - 2:40 pm

Sara (of The Page Sage) - I love the cover of Reality Boy and your choices for the nail polishes are perfect!

March 2, 2014 - 10:38 am

Annie - This is so cool! I still have yet to read Starstruck but I will definitely. I love books set in the thirties and the fact that it’s also in Hollywood makes it even better! I don’t think the yellow would look good on my nails either but I really love the turquoise. I also must try black and gray – I don’t usually wear darker colours but it’d be good to experiment a little!

Nailed It: Tales (and Nails) of Friendship

It’s February! A very special month over here at Rather Be Reading because someone is due to have her baby this month, another someone is celebrating a birthday, and at the end of the month, we celebrate three years since the first time we met! (We’ll let you guess who is who with those first […]

Ellice - I love this feature ladies! Those colors are so pretty (I’m especially loving the sparkle in Cynthia). February is a big month for y’all! Congrats, Magan, on your beautiful little bundle of joy. Happy birthday, Estelle. And congrats to you BOTH for becoming close friends and starting a blog that so many people adore 🙂

Kelly - I don’t have anything to add to the conversation, I just wanted to say how much I love this feature! You always nail (no pun intended!) the colours; they always match perfectly!

February 3, 2014 - 4:02 pm

Rachel - I’m so excited to read both of these books! YAY FRIENDSHIPS. For reals though. We need more of that in YA. I have Maybe One Day but I’ve been putting it off because I’m afraid it’s going to turn me into a mess. I hadn’t heard of The Sound of Letting Go before now but that’s totally going on my TBR. I ADORE Myrtle. It’s a very sexy color. Reece is pretty cool too, though I rarely wear purple.

February 3, 2014 - 9:06 am

Betty - Love the nail colors with the books!! I love books that focus on friendship, but I hate reading about cancer so not sure I’ll go for Maybe One Day. 🙁
Happy Birthday, Estelle!!!!!
Congratulations (super soon) Magan!!!! I am so excited for you!!!

February 2, 2014 - 9:18 pm

Alexa S. - YAY FOR FRIENDSHIP! I love having been able to meet and become friends with you both, and am excited for what February will bring. Beautiful covers + beautiful nail polish — it totally works!

February 2, 2014 - 9:16 pm

Kailia Sage - I love this feature so much. I might need to get Julep nail polishes just to see how I like them since everyone is raving about them.

February 2, 2014 - 5:29 pm

alice-jane - I love how you guys decided to focus on friendship novels since I feel like there’s not a lot of books that focus on friendships. Female friendships have defined my life to a certain point and I’ve learned a lot from my friends– through the laughter, the struggles and more.

I love the bokeh and the color scheme for The Sound of Letting Go. The title’s quite nice, too, in my opinion. Also, I can’t imagine the struggles that the characters went through in Maybe One Day but I’m glad that it was a great read, despite the tearjerker.

February 2, 2014 - 11:40 am

Molly | wrapped up in books - I’m excited to check out these books that prominently feature female friendships. Love the nail polish and cover pairings. It’s a fun feature.

February 2, 2014 - 8:06 am

Andi - I love this! Two of my favorite things, books and nail polish. Great colors to go with the books and I think I have most of these colors. 🙂

Nailed It: Upcoming January Releases

Eeep! Welcome back for our first 2014 Nailed It post! We’re switching things up again to focus on January 2014 book releases because the new year just screams new releases, doesn’t it? Besides, you might have a gift card or two burning a whole in your pocket that you *need* to spend on one (or […]

Alexa S. - Marion and Evelyn are LOVELY colors. You girls are making me want to go and order them from Julep! Seriously. As always, love this post — though not so much the fact that it makes me want to shop for books and nail polish, lol.

January 6, 2014 - 2:45 pm

Lisa Schensted - THAT PURPLE OMG. Evelyn is GORGEOUS.

January 6, 2014 - 1:03 pm

Lucy - Can’t wait to read both of these books! Really nice polish pairings too. Inspiring!

January 5, 2014 - 7:23 pm

Jen @ Books and Other Happy Ever Afters - I just read BEING SLOANE JACOBS and loved it! And I am SO loving the nail polish choices, especially “something blue”! And I’ve actually never heard of WHEN I WAS THE GREATEST, but I very much like the pairing you’ve done with the colors, like “catrina”. I need Julep nail polishes! Lovely post, ladies 🙂

January 5, 2014 - 3:41 pm

Jess - I love the warm/cool tones of all these covers. That Something New is calling my name !

January 5, 2014 - 8:16 am

Cassie - OMG. YES. TO ALL OF THIS.

All colors are gorgeous and i am soooo looking forward to both books, particularly the latter cuz it sounds so interesting!!

As always. Adore this feature!!!

Nailed It: Thankful for Family

With Thanksgiving Day so so close (we can’t believe it), we’ve decided to change things up once again for NAILED IT and focus on books with great family influences. Sometimes books in YA tend to go heavy on romance and friendships and forget that there are parents at home, but we have always noted to […]

"Time" is now bendy... - Tamara Ireland Stone - […] “It’s been really hard for me to stop thinking about the Time Between Us series. It was one of those unexpected reading experiences for me this year, and I can’t wait to read it again. (How many books can you say that about?). If you are on the prowl for a well-rounded story… be sure to check out these two books.” — Rather Be Reading […]

November 19, 2013 - 9:02 pm

Alexa Y. - I am LOVING the palettes, as usual ladies! These colors are NICE. And I’m so glad you liked that series E, because it’s one of my favorites. And M, I can’t wait to read Ink is Thicker than Water! Hmm, as for books with family in them, I think most Sarah Dessen books do have that aspect. But my favorite example is always Second Chance Summer 🙂

November 19, 2013 - 7:32 pm

Bookworm1858 - I agree that the pink would have seemed more summery than the addition of blue. I love that you both talked about family in your descriptions-that tends to be important to me in a book and I’m pleased that both of these are on my to-read list.

November 19, 2013 - 2:02 pm

Nicole - Love both of these palettes, but especially the first! I still need to read both of these books though! I know, I know. *bows head in shame*. Wonderful post ladies!

November 19, 2013 - 9:34 am

Meg - Love both of these color palettes, and it’s always so refreshing to find supportive parents present in YA! I’m really liking the sound of both books… off to add to my wishlist!

Nailed It: Halloween Edition

Happy October, friends! It’s time for us to discuss book covers and manicures in our monthly Nailed It. This go ’round, instead of choosing an October book release we’re looking forward to, we decided to spice things up by choosing a thriller, horror, or mystery book to fit the mood of Halloween. EEEP. If you’ve […]

Alexa Y. - I haven’t read either of these books yet, but I do love the nail polish colors that you’ve both chosen! I’m not sure which one is my favorite, but I’m leaning towards either Minnie or Brandt. They’re perfect fall colors to me!

October 15, 2013 - 8:34 pm

Ellice - Y’all I just love this feature… It’s different and just so much fun! I haven’t tried Julep nail polish yet… I’ve seen a LOT of people discussing it on twitter, so I will have to change this!

I’m not much of a horror/thriller reader either. I read the Mara Dyer books last year, and those were about as scary as I can handle. I usually read before I go to bed at night, but I had to read those during the day! I’m such a wimp 🙂 haha

October 14, 2013 - 5:08 pm

April Books & Wine - I think I wore Molly the other week.

I love these colors though, nice job matching the colors to the covers!

October 14, 2013 - 3:01 pm

molly @ wrapped up in books - I love this post! Those colors are great.

October 14, 2013 - 5:02 am

Erin - I love your nailed it posts!
I haven’t read either of these but I have been reading ‘Halloween themed’ books over the last month. Out of those that I have read I would recommend suspense novel I Know What You Did Last Summer (Lois Duncan), Mira Grant’s new release Parasite, or The Hole (Guy Burt) if you like more of a psychological thriller. x

October 13, 2013 - 10:11 pm

Aneeqah @ My Not So Real Life - Eeee, both of these color combinations are simply GORGEOUS, you two. Seriously. I don’t really do my nails often, but seeing these combos makes me want to go buy these colors. =) I totally agree about the color of the girl’s skirt on the cover of Another Little Piece- it is so adorable. Also, I love how subdued the colors are for Miss Peregine’s. I haven’t read the book (it seems like I need to pick up more horror too!), but I feel like it matches the overall feel of the book.

Lovely post you two! <3

October 13, 2013 - 6:18 pm

VeganYANerds - Lovely colour choices, ladies! And like you both, I am not a horror fan but I want to read both of these 🙂

October 13, 2013 - 5:23 pm

Jen - AAAHH I am a nail polish whore so I freaking love this post! The colors are perfect, I love the dark grays. Awesome post!

October 13, 2013 - 4:46 pm

Gaby @ Queen Ella Bee Reads - I feel like I don’t spend enough time trawling the Julep website. But it’s okay because this feature exists. I love the Minnie color so much. And the rest of the ones you ladies picked. Such excellent polish-to-cover matching.

As for the creepiness factor, Miss Peregrine is definitely a good choice. I haven’t read Another Little Pierce but just the font on the cover looks terrifying.

That being said, Halloween or not, I don’t really read that many scary books. Sooooo. *hides*

October 13, 2013 - 1:43 pm

Sarah - Yay! Nailed It’s back! This excites me, mostly because I decided to try Julep because of these posts!

October 13, 2013 - 12:12 pm

Hollie @ Music, Books and Tea - I love both these colour combos! I have Miss Peregrine’s on my list to read for halloween, and I’m also planning on picking up Rot and Ruin by Jonathan Maberry, because it’s not October without a zombie book! (For me, at least.)

October 13, 2013 - 9:59 am

Bookworm1858 - I don’t usually read scary books for Halloween though I’ve seen lots of people who do. I just love the color combos here especially the choice of Another Little Piece to bring some color into the post.
