Estelle’s End of the Year Survey (So Long 2013)

I love the End of the Year Survey + I loathe the End of the Year survey because it’s so difficult to pick favorites, especially after reading 160 books this year. I’m going to try to do what I did last year which is answer each question as differently, as possible so I can get […]

Judith - I’m really, really happy I found your blog and met you in 2013, E! <3 You are so sweet and I love talking books with you.

I don't know why I didn't mark that passage from Just One Day (I don't even remember it!) but it's so beautiful. To be honest, I could just quote that entire book. You're also really making me want to read How To Love.

And I wish I lived closer so we could meet as well. The pics you took with all those other lovely bloggers are so great!

January 6, 2014 - 10:46 pm

Alexa S. - You know what? I’m one of those people that immediately adds books to my TBR right after you share them for Big Kids’ Table. Maybe I should make it a point to read at least one from each batch you recommend this year…

Also, I am insanely jealous you’ve met Cassie in person. I’m of a mind to make sure it happens that she and I get to meet in person this year too!

Other things… I look forward to hanging out more with you in 2014, since I feel like we didn’t get to do that enough after I left in August. I foresee shenanigans – Disney, bookish or Broadway – in our future. Lots of love for you, E! <3

Rather Be Reading: Magan's Farewell to 2013 - […] precious (does that even make sense?). Hopefully I can give you some solid recommendations, but Estelle’s End of Year Survey just rocked my socks off with all the variety. Be sure to revisit hers for even more book recs! And […]

December 30, 2013 - 9:57 am

Alisa Selene - The Time Between Us sounds really cool! I need to check it out! Happy New Year!

December 29, 2013 - 12:20 pm

Jessika Michaelangelo - I love this list. You answered each question so thoughtfully, and as a (relatively) new follower, I found some books and posts that I hadn’t had a chance to read before. This blog has been such an inspiration to me as a new blogger, I love it. You girls are both so genuine and I know I can trust your thoughts on books.

Anyway, happiest of New Years to you both πŸ™‚

P.S. I am TOTALLY jealous that you got to meet Lauren Graham! That is an awesome picture!

December 28, 2013 - 1:09 pm

Melissa @ Writer Grrl Reads - I’m with you on this series being exhausting to fill out, but I LOVED reading your answers!!!! Also, I just ordered a copy of How to Love, solely based on your love for the book (and Magan’s too, of course). Pregnancy books are a little unnerving now, but since I know Magan loved it too, I’m excited to give it a go!

Also, thank you for the shout-out on my review!!! It was one of my favourites of the year πŸ™‚

Finally, I, too, succumbed to Cassie’s book pushing on Nowhere But Home, but it’s sitting on my shelves…I’ve seen it pop up on a few surveys so far, so I’m looking foward to savouring it in the new year.

Can’t wait for more amazing posts for you lovely ladies! And, of course, to meet Baby B!!!!! That’s one of my most highly anticipated moments of 2014 for sure!

December 28, 2013 - 6:12 am

Cassie - TOTALLY read that whole thing and now think I have to read LCD Love Story and Tamara Ireleland Stone ASAP. You are so sweet and so happy we became friends this year. You made me tear up! Lucky for me its 6am so no one noticed πŸ˜‰

December 27, 2013 - 3:27 pm

Sara (of The Page Sage) - I loved reading your answers! OCD Love Story sounds great and I really need to read Two Boys Kissing already! Reality Boy definitely deserves more attention- the characters are so well-crafted. Rafe is an awesome character because he makes so many mistakes and Fangirl is definitely worth a reread.

Recaptains is so cool- Series Sisters is a similar site.

December 27, 2013 - 2:16 pm

Maggie @ Just a Couple More Pages - I’m going to leave you a bunch of annoying comments as I read your survey…thank you for reaffirming my decision not to read The Fault In Our Stars…I really need to read Starstruck…I can’t wait for you to read Elana K. Arnold’s other books either!…I guess I have to read OCD A Love Story…thank for the shout out, I’m so glad I met you virtually and in real life this year! And I love that we can disagree, those are the best type of friendships, IMO!

December 27, 2013 - 1:44 pm

Christina @ Allodoxophobia - What an amazing post! And thank you so much for the shout out πŸ™‚ I’m so glad we found each other this year. Perhaps we’ll get to meet in person in 2014!

December 27, 2013 - 11:11 am

Meg - Aw, loved this post — and can feel my TBR expanding as we speak! Thank you so much for the mention, too — brought a huge smile to my face. I’m hoping I get much more reading done in 2014… this wasn’t my year for books! Eek. But I have plenty of novels to keep me occupied starting in January!

December 27, 2013 - 10:38 am

Lily - I really need to get my hands on The Vow by Jessica Martinez since I loved both her previous books but just haven’t gotten around to reading this one. Nice list you’ve got here, it sounds like you read a lot of books this year that you really enjoyed.

Lily @ a lilysbookblog

December 27, 2013 - 10:11 am

Quinn @ Quinn's Book Nook - I love doing this survey, too, even though it takes so long to complete. It really helps me reflect on my reading and blogging for the year.

Anyway, I couldn’t list only one favorite for the year either. But I think that’s a good thing. It means we read s a lot of AMAZING books this year. So yay!

I haven’t read any of your favorites this year (shame on me) but Wringer is at the top of my TBR list. I think I’m going to listen to the audiobook. I just love the cover for that book, too.

I’ve been really curious about The Time Between Us series, but Time Travel freaks me out a bit. Although, you say the same thing, and you did love these books, so I’m thinking I should give them a try.

You read so many books this year! 160! I’m not exactly sure how many I read because I also include all the picture books I read on my Goodreads challenge. I mean they are books, but I can read them in 5-10 minutes.

Anyway, I’m pretty excited about next year.

Judith - I also wouldn’t mind Santa bringing you If You Find Me, Estelle. (I forgot! Did he?) Did I mention that I like that book? Because I do. It’s pretty good. I guess.

January 6, 2014 - 7:01 pm

Alexa S. - It makes me ridiculously happy to see that SOMETHING STRANGE & DEADLY is on your list, E! You know Rachel and I absolutely LOVED that series, and I hope you do too once you get a chance to read it. You’ll also have to let me know if you get Goodbye to All That — I have it but haven’t read it yet!

As for you M, I think you’ll enjoy Crash Into You. Even though it’s not my favorite of the McGarry books, it’s still pretty fun to read! Plus, the car and racing parts are awesome.

December 27, 2013 - 12:41 pm

Hannah @ So Obsessed With - Yippee for Crash Into You and Pivot Point! Those are both such good reads πŸ™‚ Andddd I own If You Find Me and Something Strange and Deadly. I should probably get on reading those! Can’t wait to see if Santa brought you what you wanted!

December 25, 2013 - 8:35 am

alisa selene - Merry Christmas! I so want ‘Crash Into You’!

December 24, 2013 - 4:11 pm

Candice - With the exception of Something Strange and Deadly (which is fab, btw) I haven’t read any of these! I’d love a copy of The Art of Wishing; very nearly put this on my own list today! Hope Santa is good to both of you this year! Merry Christmas!

December 24, 2013 - 12:59 pm

Maggie @ Just a Couple More Pages - Sex & Violence, yay! I hope Estelle gets this so we can talk about it! And If you Find Me, Losing Hope, and Pivot Point were all favorite 2013 reads for me! Merry Christmas ladies!

December 24, 2013 - 12:46 pm

Lucy - I spy two books that I suspect will be on my year-end favorites list – If You Find Me and Sex and Violence. And Oh! Crash Into You and Losing Hope are awesome too.

Hope Santa is very good to both of you this year. Happy holidays, Estelle and Magan!

December 24, 2013 - 8:32 am

Ginger @ GReads! - Merry Christmas Eve ladies!! I hope “Santa” (aka husbands lol) bring see this post too πŸ˜‰ Great picks!

December 24, 2013 - 3:01 am

Chrissi Reads - I loved Losing Hope, Crash Into You and Pivot Point. I hope Santa brings you these books or that you get your hands on them soon. Happy Christmas πŸ™‚

December 24, 2013 - 2:42 am

Jen @ Books and Other Happy Ever Afters - I actually own a few of these on my Kindle, but I hear that the physical copy of CRASH INTO YOU is gorgeous, so I would love a copy of that one too! And I can imagine THE ART OF WISHING being all sorts of pretty, too. All of these are great Christmas gifts to wish for, I’m crossing my fingers for you both! πŸ™‚

December 24, 2013 - 1:55 am

Sara (of The Page Sage) - Something Strange and Deadly!! I really (selfishly) hope you get that book so we can talk about it after you read it! πŸ™‚ Pivot Point sounds really great- I shamefully haven’t read it either.

Hope you have have a Merry Christmas and that you get all the books on your wishlist! πŸ™‚

December 24, 2013 - 1:36 am

Nicole - Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Mansfield Park (notice a theme??)

December 24, 2013 - 12:52 am

Aly @ My Heart Hearts Books - Pivot Point, Crash Into You and Something Strange & Deadly!!!! I haven’t read the other books on your list but I can’t personally vouch for those. But I hope you get some or any of the books on your list!

Aly @ My Heart Hearts BooksMy TTT

December 24, 2013 - 12:49 am

Jen @ Pop! Goes The Reader - Estelle: I’m quite certain only dolphins and dogs could hear me when I saw The Art Of Wishing on your Christmas wishlist and let out a resounding yelp. What can I say? I just ADORE that novel! Here’s hoping Santa remembers to bring you a copy as I would absolutely love to hear your thoughts on it. I really do think you would enjoy it! πŸ™‚
Wishing you both a very Merry Christmas!

Shelve It: A Few Nights Before Christmas

I won’t forget to eat cookies, but thank you very much for the reminder!

MWAH!

December 23, 2013 - 7:16 pm

Rachel - Oh my gosh, I can’t wait to read Ashes to Ashes. Like, CANNOT. WAIT. And I did not know Ann Brashares was coming out with something new! Snapshot sounds interesting, so I’ll have to check that one out. I love your videos πŸ™‚

December 22, 2013 - 6:31 pm

Alexa S. - YOU NEED TO READ BLUE-EYED DEVIL. I swear, Racquel, Sharon and I have been shoving that book at everyone since Sizzle & Swoon week a few months ago! We really, really, really love the Travis family. Actually, we really, REALLY, REALLY love Hardy Cates.

That being said, I also hope that you read Ransom and fall in love with it! Garwood’s historical romances are among my favourites, and this was one of the first ones I ever read. You’ll have to keep me posted on when you read it!

And you’ve gotten some amazing books, gifts and e-books. It sounds like you’re all set for some awesome reading for the next few months πŸ˜‰

December 22, 2013 - 2:31 pm

Sunny - So many great-sounding books! I just got Ashes to Ashes as well so I hope we both like it. And These Broken Stars! Ah, I hope you love it as much as I did πŸ™‚

December 22, 2013 - 12:34 pm

Quinn @ Quinn's Book Nook - Estelle, I love Julie Garwood. Seriously, she’s one of my favorite romance authors, and Ransom is wonderful. It’s actually not my favorite Garwood, but it’s way up there. I can’t wait to hear what you think of it. Also, I love LIsa Kleypas’s historical romances. I haven’t read her contemporaries, although I’ve heard good things. I really wish she would write historicals again. Until recently I haven’t really read a lot of romances for five years or so (I used to read them ALL THE TIME while in college), but the last few months I can’t stop reading them. But what I wanted to say was that when I read them, I also tended to have a few authors that I loved, and it was always so difficult to find new authors. So I hope you like Kleypas and Garwood. Garwood doesn’t write historicals anymore.

I’ve been super curious about These Broken Stars, too. That cover is gorgeous, and I’ve heard such amazing things, but I’m not a big fan of science fiction either. I did read three sci-fi books this year, though, and loved them. You’ll have to let me know if you like These Broken Stars and if you think those that aren’t big on sci-fi would like it.

Have a great Christmas!

December 22, 2013 - 9:58 am

Jess @ Gone with the Words - Sweet Thing Ginger also gifted me Sweet Thing as my bday/xmas gift. πŸ˜€ That was really nice of her. I actually started reading it two nights ago and it’s REALLY GOOD so far!

I was so happy to have gotten you as my #TBTBSanta!! I had a lot of fun shopping for you. πŸ™‚

I just went and bought the two Angie Stanton books you mention because I love musician books and yeah.

Let me know when you decide to read Amplified. I own it and need to read it!!!

December 22, 2013 - 9:50 am

Stormy - You got some pretty great books! I thought Ask Again Later was really cute–it’s just a nice, simple sweet read. These Broken Stars was also one of my favorites of the year. I wouldn’t worry about the science fiction aspects too much–the information is spread out pretty well and the focus is definitely on the survival and the romance more than the sci-fi elements. And Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is one of my all-time favorites book–I really hope you absolutely love it!

December 22, 2013 - 9:06 am

Brittany @ The Book Addict's Guide - YAYYY Always love seeing your face!! *takes a sip of coffee* It’s like we’re chatting! (Oh, this is just said. We just need to see each other again IRL.)
I’m really looking forward to Ask Again Later and!!! It comes out on my birthday! WOO! πŸ™‚
Lovely video! Very fun!

December 22, 2013 - 2:37 am

Melissa @ Writer Grrl Reads - (Oops, didn’t mean to hit post!) …. Back on the tree, our tree looks a little disheveled. Second, I’m a little sad that your cat watched the taping, but didn’t make an appearance :(. And finally, what a great bunch of books!!! I have that Aristotle & Dante book on hold at the library because I keep hearing such great things about it! I didn’t realize it won so many awards too!

Merry merry Christmas!!!!!

December 22, 2013 - 2:30 am

Melissa @ Writer Grrl Reads - First of all, your tree is so pretty! I’m also mildly envious because my tree looks rather disheveled this year — between Marko and the cat pulling ornaments and garlands off and me sticking them haphazardly

December 22, 2013 - 1:49 am

Liz - The way you described Amplified makes me want to read it! I also totally get you what you say about being afraid that you won’t understand sci fi. I got Not A Drop To Drink when it was on sale as well. Have an awesome Christmas!

December 22, 2013 - 1:08 am

Jen @ Pop! Goes The Reader - What a fun video, Estelle! It looks like you have quite the promising stack of to-be-read novels ahead of you! I was particularly excited to hear you mention The Silent Wife. This novel is currently taking Canada by storm and I recently purchased a copy last week because I was curious to learn what all the fuss was about. It’s truly a shame that the author, A.S.A. Harrison, wasn’t able to live long enough to enjoy the immense amount of praise her novel has garnered πŸ™ In any event, it would be a lot of fun to read this and compare our thoughts on the novel!

Wishing both you and Magan a very Merry Christmas! *Hugs* I feel blessed and extremely thankful to have been given the opportunity to meet both of you this year. P.S. “Don’t forget to eat cookies” is advice I like to live by on a daily basis πŸ˜‰

TTT: Our New Favorite Must-Read Authors

Welcome back for a new Top Ten Tuesday post! Today, the awesome ladies at The Broke and the Bookish are asking which authors were new-to-us this year. December 29, 2013 - 1:25 am

Bookworm1858 - Rainbow Rowell is definitely my pick for favorite-loved getting to read three books by her this year and am hoping for more to come in 2014!

December 20, 2013 - 7:50 pm

Alexa Y. - It makes me so happy to see that I’ve actually read a lot of the authors you guys picked out this year! A particular favorite is Tamara Ireland Stone, who has written two books that I really liked. As for authors I haven’t read who are on your list, I definitely want to read OCD Love Story by Corey Ann Haydu because I really think I’m going to like it a lot!

December 17, 2013 - 4:44 pm

Lisa Schensted - I love the variety here! I’ll have to add more to my TBR, it seems!

December 17, 2013 - 2:52 pm

Brittany @ The Book Addict's Guide - Seriously, ladies. You’re killing me. Because pretty much everything on your list that I haven’t read yet, I need to! Aw hell, I know I can always go to you for good book recs! Fantastic list, as always!

December 17, 2013 - 1:40 pm

Sara at WhatANerdGIrlSays - I definitely agree on Andrew Smith. Winger blew me away, it was my fave book of the year, tied with Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. Both amazing novels πŸ™‚ I met Elana K Arnold this year, and now I really want to read her books!

December 17, 2013 - 12:02 pm

Allison L - April gave me her ARC of Openly Straight, and I can’t wait to read it. Also, I feel like I really have to check out This Song Will Save Your Life sometime soon because I’ve heard so many good things about it.

December 17, 2013 - 11:43 am

Maggie @ Just a Couple More Pages - I have lots of the same picks on my list (or people that easily could have been on my list). I’m so happy Estelle is on the Elana K. Arnold bandwagon now. All that’s left is reading her other two books!

December 17, 2013 - 11:35 am

Anna - Love your list, ladies! I definitely need to get on the Winger bandwagon — and Nantucket Blue too!

December 17, 2013 - 10:28 am

Meg - Going to have to add a ton of these to my wishlist for 2014! I’m particularly loving the sound of Starstruck.

December 17, 2013 - 9:10 am

Ginger @ GReads! - Ohh great list, ladies! I’m not sure how I managed to do this, but I forgot Amy Spalding on mine. Oops! I’m hoping to get to Winger next year.

December 17, 2013 - 1:07 am

Lucy - We have Amy Spalding and Bill Konigsberg in common, and how could I have forgotten Leila Sales! I just picked up Time Between Us so I’m happy to see it on your list. I’m looking forward to reading How to Love too. Great lists, ladies!

December 17, 2013 - 12:51 am

Allison @ The Allure of Books - I need to drop everything and get my hands on a copy of Winger. Everyone that has read it seems absolutely devoted to it! I MUST SEE WHAT I AM MISSING.

December 17, 2013 - 12:10 am

alice-jane - I haven’t read How to Love and any of Rainbow Rowell’s novels but hopefully I do by the end of the year since they all look really good! If I can’t hopefully I’ll get to read them sometime next year. New Year’s resolution planning, right?

I’m looking forward to Jenny Han’s release next year the most.

Big Kids’ Table: A 2013 Overview

The LAST Big Kids’ Table of the year? What?! Unfortunately I did miss last month but I hope you’ll forgive me with today’s post. It’s been so much fun to stretch the possibilites of this feature throughou the year: getting other bloggers involved (Rachel, Hannah, Ginger, Asheley, Cassie, and Elena), completely hacked by Daphne at […]

December 27, 2013 - 12:37 pm

Hannah @ So Obsessed With - Yayyyyy for one of my VERY FAVORITE book features! Seriously, I hope you always do Big Kids Table because it’s something I absolutely look forward to each month. Thanks so much for letting me participate this year, and I can’t wait to see what 2014 holds for you + adult fiction! I somehow missed Forever, Interrupted when you reviewed it – definitely intrigued by that one!

December 20, 2013 - 7:54 pm

Alexa Y. - I swear, it’s like your goal in life to make sure my TBR is never-ending and always growing πŸ˜‰ But seriously, the Big Kids’ Table is one of my favorite features on RBR! You always feature titles that interest me and that have great-sounding stories, and a lot of them are definitely still on my TBR. Here’s to hoping I read more of these titles soon!

December 15, 2013 - 1:28 pm

Estelle - The hubs better get on the guest reviewing! I think it’s hilarious he hasn’t read the King book yet. I do think there is some kind of unwritten rule. Once it hits a year, you should be free to borrow before he reads it. πŸ˜‰

December 14, 2013 - 11:06 pm

michelle - i have the perfect match on my kindle. now i really want to read it. kristan higgins is the best <3

December 14, 2013 - 2:28 pm

Melissa @ Writer Grrl Reads - I, too, gave into Cassie’s book pushing and purchased a copy of Nowhere But Home (she must have lots of Canadian followers too, because I had to visit two Chapters stores before I found a copy!) I haven’t read it yet, but it’s definitely on my 2014 reading list. And I still want to read that King book, but I still feel guilty reading it before my husband does, since it was his Christmas gift last year. He’s just too freakin’ SLOW when it comes to reading sometimes! He started The Book Thief about two months ago (I think?) and is about halfway through it. He’s promised to do guest reviews for me for all of the books that he DOES finish, but at this rate it’ll be about two books per year =P

December 12, 2013 - 2:36 pm

Quinn @ Quinn's Book Nook - I’ve been in such a romance novel mood the last few weeks. I have been focusing on historical romances, but now I’m kind of shifting to contemporaries. I’m in the process of reading my firest Bella Andre book – Kissing Under the Mistletoe, and I’m really liking it so far. I can’t wait to read something by Kristan Higgins.

Thanks for sharing Big Kid Books!

December 12, 2013 - 12:17 pm

Lucy - Perfect timing! I was just in the mood for some “big kids” books and also have gifts to buy. The only one on your list I’ve read so far is Tell the Wolves I’m Home so I have some catching up to do! I think that book is right up your alley.

The first two titles on your list sound fantastic. And I own a copy of Nowhere to Run and Someday, Someday Maybe and must fit them in soon!

I’ve heard good things about the Jim Henson audio so I may go that route.

Thanks for the recs!

December 12, 2013 - 9:26 am

Meg - Such fun to read! I adore Julie Buxbaum and really enjoyed The Opposite of Love, though it’s been many years since I read it. Lauren Graham’s debut was a highlight of the year for me, too, and I was also totally digging Nowhere But Home! It was just such a unique premise — cooking last meals — and the Texas setting and romance were awesome. Thanks for bringing me back to a happy reading place! πŸ™‚

Brittany @ The Book Addict's Guide - I kind of cannot wait to read Roomies. I’m also kind of scared to start because what if it’s exactly like my WIP? (It’s not, but you know. College. I’m afraid I’m writing an un-original novel. SORRY, off topic!!!!)
I really liked Monument 14! I hope you enjoy it. It’s more post-apocalyptic, not dystopian so it is a bit more “contemporary” I guess! πŸ™‚ Let me know what you think!
Also, Happy Thanksgiving!!!! So thankful for lovely friends like you ladies!!

November 26, 2013 - 5:46 pm

Alexa Y. - I haven’t seen Catching Fire yet either, but I’m going tomorrow with my sister — and I’m excited! Frozen is also out tomorrow, I know, and I can’t wait to watch it either. Perhaps we’ll pull a double and watch them both at once? We shall see. Either way, I am definitely catching that too.

And your book haul sounds pretty great! I’m glad that you’re able to hold on to your book buying ban and still get some pretty awesome-sounding books too. (Also, hi Pepper! And that mug — is it a mug? — is the cutest!)

November 25, 2013 - 11:26 am

Quinn @ Quinn's Book Nook - I have heard good things about Catching Fire, too, although I don’t plan to see it. But I am SOOOO excited for Frozen, and I’m hoping my cousin might want to go with me.

November 25, 2013 - 6:55 am

April Books & Wine - I really liked Monument 14, despite a few issues. It was a quick read and very action-oriented.

I’ve heard good things about The Art Of Fielding.

Hahhhhh, book bans are hard, especially when things are shiny and new. I suck at them, especially because I am like oh- Kindle books don’t count, but they totally DO COUNT.

Feel better!

November 24, 2013 - 11:22 pm

Sara (of The Page Sage) - The Killing Woods sounds really good! Really liked Christopher’s Stolen.

I haven’t seen Catching Fire either, but I’ve heard it’s amazing! Frozen looks really cute but I just can’t stomach seeing it after what the comments the Disney animator made about female characters. :/

November 24, 2013 - 8:25 pm

Melissa @ Writer Grrl Reads - Kudos on keeping up with your book buying ban! I know how tough that is … I didn’t think that I’d actually buy many books this year since a) I’m on EI while on maternity leave so therefore a reduced income, b) I thought I’d actually READ the books on my shelves and c) I promised myself that I’d work on finishing the series that I’d started before reading any new ones but …. well, I guess those reasons weren’t good enough =P So, yeah, I feel you on that one.

BUT, I also hope you feel better soon! My hubby was down with a cold earlier this week, and has now passed along his sniffles to Marko & I. So it’s been a lazy weekend on our end too.

November 24, 2013 - 4:38 pm

alisa selene - Catching Fire was great! SO excited for Frozen..I am a huge Disney fan!
