Melissa @ Writer Grrl Reads - Whoops, hit post before I was done :). I keep hearing great things about Beautiful Ruins, but the cover doesn’t excite me. Maybe the shiny version is better? Regardless, I look forward to hearing what you think, and all about BEA too!!!

May 31, 2013 - 7:53 pm

Melissa @ Writer Grrl Reads - Your new glasses are super cute!

May 31, 2013 - 5:10 pm

Tara @ Hobbitsies - Your glasses are super cute! And I had a lot of fun hanging out with you the other night – we should definitely see a show together next time I’m in the city! In the meantime, I’ve got my tickets to the Newsies tomorrow night πŸ™‚

May 31, 2013 - 12:26 pm

Bookworm1858 - Cute dress! I can’t believe it’s almost June either-then it will be almost June 30 and that’s halfway through 2013, one of the fastest years ever in my memory.

May 31, 2013 - 9:50 am

Daphne - yeah, so, thanks for adding to my TBR. πŸ™‚

May 31, 2013 - 9:49 am

Jess @ Gone with the Words - Love the glasses!! I really like that style, and they look good on you. πŸ™‚ I just went and added New Money to my GR wishlist and am totally going to see about reading Criminal soon! πŸ˜€ HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!

Estelle’s Top 10 Tuesday: The Hard Stuff (In Books)

Greetings, friends! Truth? I’ve loved so many of the past Top 10 Tuesday memes but I have been unable to come up with 10 items to list for mostΒ of them. TODAY I WILL DO IT. I definitely don’t shy away from tough subjects in books. They are intense, emotionally-stirring, and, when done well, help you […]

Hannah @ So Obsessed With - Oh, I love that you included “following your heart” as a tough subject! It’s not one that I’d immediately think of, but it’s really fitting. It also helps that I LOVED both books included with that number πŸ™‚

May 16, 2013 - 1:25 pm

Lauren - What a wonderful list – I haven’t read any of these before, but now I’ve got some more books to add to my never-ending to-read list!

May 15, 2013 - 4:49 pm

Molli - I really want to read both Beautiful Music for Ugly Children, and The Miseducation of Cameron Post. I considered buying the latter, and just haven’t. I love your take on this list, Estelle, because you’ve given so many wide examples.

Have a nice day, ladies!

May 14, 2013 - 11:22 pm

Sash - As you know, I loved Dreamland Social Club. Jane really came into herself through learning about her mother and that’s something tough to do and yet, totally relateable.

May 14, 2013 - 8:35 pm

Maggie @ Just a Couple More Pages - Yay, I’m glad you did a TTT post this week! Lots of books I’ve enjoyed on your list. After reading Going Vintage I decided I need to read more by Lindsay Leavitt, now I just need to get on that. Great list!

May 14, 2013 - 7:23 pm

Tara - I’m a big fan of your categories πŸ™‚ I’ve only read a handful of the books you featured but I’m really intrigued by the books under Acceptance and Truth.

May 14, 2013 - 2:14 pm

Quinn @ Quinn's Book Nook - Great list, Estelle. I had a really touch time thinking of ten (and in fact only thought of nine). Although I totally should have included Eleanor & Park! I am kicking myself for that one slipping my mind.

I’m very curious about Someday, Someday, Maybe

May 14, 2013 - 1:45 pm

Lucy - I have to say you have just awesome taste in books. Several of these I’ve read and loved like E&P, Where You Are, Sean Griswold, and Just One Day. So I know I need to check out the other books on your list. Criminal sounds fantastic.

May 14, 2013 - 12:55 pm

Alexa Y. - I love what you did with this post E! The issues/tough stuff you chose to point out are great, and the book suggestions are spot on. Great list!

May 14, 2013 - 12:02 pm

Cecelia - I *loved* SEAN GRISWOLD’S HEAD, and I’m so glad that I’ve seen it on multiple lists today. I haven’t checked out any of your other picks, but I can see that I need to. Thanks for sharing!

If you’d like, you can check out my list here.

May 14, 2013 - 9:38 am

Eve @ Every Flavour Books - Wow, these are great topics you thought of. I’ve only read The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight but I’m definitely adding the rest to my TBR if they’re not already there. Tough subjects are hard to read about but I love books that deal with them because they really make us think. Awesome list!

May 14, 2013 - 9:12 am

Kate @ Ex Libris - Oh, MAN. What an awesome list. I see some of my all-time favorites on here and some that I didn’t know about, so thank you for that. I’m so glad that you mentioned Nantucket Blue because I really loved that book. It was very well done.

May 14, 2013 - 8:47 am

Ginger @ GReads! - This is done really well, Estelle. I like how you grouped them. I definitely agree with you about TBoBH since I just recently read it. I considered adding it to my list today, but had already picked my 10 lol.

May 14, 2013 - 8:41 am

Laura @ the Booksmartie - The last two sound so good! I already own Just One Day and thought I’d read it in July, but now I’m thinking I might have to squeeze it in next week – it sounds way to good to wait any longer πŸ™‚

May 14, 2013 - 5:43 am

Lori - I love, love, love your list! There’s still a few on here that I need to read. Cam Post is one of my favorites!

May 14, 2013 - 4:31 am

Bekka @ Pretty Deadly Reviews - Sooo many of these titles are on my TBR right now. I love that you included the dangers of technology. Not a lot of people would consider that a tough subject, but I definitely think it’s relevant in today’s world. Also, I LOVED Bumped & Thumped. Awesome picks!

Rebecca - I didn’t even think to include divorce in this topic, but it definitely goes there. I have a hard time reading stuff about bullying, but I really loved Eleanor and Park. Nice post!

May 14, 2013 - 12:38 am

Tabitha S. - Ohhh, I love how you took a different spin on the topic this week! Divorce is definitely a hard one to read about, but it’s something that almost everyone has to deal with in life – so when an author does a good job of portraying it, it’s amazing.

Great list!!

Magan’s May 12, 2013 Shelve It

Surprise, surprise! I’m back with a vlog for this week’s Shelve It! It’s been a while, huh? I know — I’m sorry about that. There seems to rarely be quiet time to do a vlog with our baby girl happily crawling around everywhere. (But seriously — what a joy it is to have her!) I […]

TLA sounds like it was lots of fun, and most of the books you got are ones that I’m very curious about. Hope you enjoy them!

May 13, 2013 - 1:49 pm

Ashley - I need to remind myself to be like this when I’m at ALA. Grab what I want and have time for, but don’t be greedy.

Estelle’s Shelve It from 4/20/2013

Yes. You read that right! There’s actually a Shelve It + IT’S A V-LOG. Your eyes are not playing tricks on you! Sorry about the lack of these lately but between my Lent “break” from buying books, the eBooks I’ve been purchasing (which are no fun to show to you in a video), and this […]

Alexa Y. - That party was a lot of fun even though I was really nervous! It was definitely nice to catch up with blogger friends though, and to eat at LT Burger afterwards πŸ˜‰ We need to eat there again and soon!

April 21, 2013 - 5:51 pm

Bonnie - I really enjoyed The Eternity Cure! Even more than the first installment.. can’t wait for the next one! Gosh, I still need to get on it and read Pushing the Limits. Happy Reading!

Ginger @ GReads! - Look at that necklace!! hehe πŸ˜‰ Estelle, I am proud of you for branching out to more paranormal. You know how much I love contemps, so I tend to be very picky with the paranormals I read, too. Hit me up for rec’s anytime! I hope your cold goes away soon deary. Loved SEEING you though, xoxo.

Mel@thedailyprophecy - The eternity cure!! I can’t wait, since I love The immortal rules.

April Books & Wine - Ah, I wish I was going to read after leaving you a lovely comment, but alas, I have to sit at a health fair from like 10:30-2 p.m. Sigh.

Anyways, I loved your story about getting invested in Harlequin novels while on road trips with your mom. That’s so funny, but awesome too. And yay reading and yay parents reading. My mom and my grandma are total Harlequin readers too.

Man, that disney guidebook makes me want to go back, but alas, I cannot afford a vacation right now and refuse to take one until I’ve paid down my car. Sigh.

AND.

That party you mentioned sounds great — how cool that you got the opportunity to go! πŸ˜€

Happy reading!

April 21, 2013 - 1:27 am

Rebecca @ Reading Wishes - I’m a contemporary girl at heart too so I get where your coming from. Before I started blogging, it’s the only genre I used to read. But now, I can be found reading some paranormal and from time to time, the occasional sci-fi and dystopian. How come this is the first I’m hearing about Heartbeat! *runs to check out* Oh, that would probably be due to it not being on Goodreads yet! It sounds amazing though and super intense. Bloom is my favourite book of Elizabeth’s also πŸ™‚ Have fun reading!

April 20, 2013 - 11:48 pm

Sarah O - First of all, LOVE Elizabeth Scott. I’ve actually only read her four less intense contemporary books but I love them. I reread them a few months ago and I realized that Bloom is definitely my favourite, which I didn’t pick up on the first time around. She is the queen of writing misunderstandings where you totally understand both sides so it makes her MCs slightly frustrating but you still love them.

So I’ve read The Immortal Rules and I wasn’t a huge fan to be honest. I definitely wouldn’t buy the sequel but I might read it if I could borrow it. I remember it was around 400 pages and not enough of those were interesting to me to enjoy it overall. I do know that some people liked it, but it wasn’t for me. And even though contemporary is my favourite I read a lot of other genres.

So yes, so jealous of Heartbeat. I’ll definitely be picking that up!

Magan: Top Ten Tuesday — Books I Read Pre-Blogging

So I kind of cheated for today’s Top Ten Tuesday. I only chose nine books. This is so incredibly OCD of me, but when I was doing the layout, I did a grid that only had room for 9 books. I’m a bit neurotic and couldn’t force myself to squeeze in a tenth book. Oops? […]

Lucy - Nice topic and layout πŸ™‚ I’m also a fan of Love Story so I’m glad to see it on your list. And I’ve been meaning to read The Piper’s Son forever!

April 10, 2013 - 9:20 pm

VeganYANerds - I’ve had The Glass Castle on my to-read list for over a year now, I am going to make more of an effort to read it now!

April 10, 2013 - 4:57 pm

Alexa Y. - Harry Potter always gets a spot when it comes to lists like this. Such a fantastic series!

But I was a big Something Borrowed/Something Blue fan as well. Chick lit was one of the genres I read to relax prior to blogging, though it’s fallen by the wayside a bit. I may need to remedy that.

April 10, 2013 - 3:15 pm

Cynthia - YESSSS for Melina Marchetta, Myra McEntire and Jennifer Echols. I love them!! I read the first and second book in the Jessica Darling series but haven’t gotten the others yet because I heard that they weren’t as good. =/

April 10, 2013 - 1:16 pm

Angelica @ Paperback Princess - I love your blog design.

I need to read Piper’s Son by Melina Marchetta, she’s one of my fave Authors.

My Top Ten

Have a great week!

April 9, 2013 - 11:04 pm

Lisa - I have Benedict Society on my shelf. I know. It’s been there for AGES but the fact that it is a rare MG read for you that you adored tells me that I need to keep it around and give it a whirl.

April 9, 2013 - 9:15 pm

Leah @ The Pretty Good Gatsby - I VERY rarely pick up memoirs, but there must be something special about The Glass Castle. To this day I’ll get customers asking for a copy at least a few times a week.

The Mysterious Benedict Society has been on my radar for years now. My youngest sister has a copy of the first novel so it must be good – she’s not much of a reader. It certainly sounds like a series I’d be into.

A few years ago I gave chick-lit a try and it failed miserably. Since then I’ve been hesitant but determined to give it another shot and I’ve come across a few good books. Jill Mansell is a name I’m familiar with, though I have yet to read any of her books. However, if they’re as good as you say, then I really need to track down some of her stuff!

April 9, 2013 - 8:13 pm

elena - I totally get what you mean about the nine pics thing! I hate that it doesn’t go together nicely so I leave one out or I smoosh two together. Also, you make me excited to read The Mysterious Benedict Society! esp since you don’t usually read middle grade and still loved it. πŸ™‚

April 9, 2013 - 6:49 pm

Natalie @ Natflix&Books - I totally cheated and put both the entire Jessica Darling series and the entire Harry Potter series. Something Borrowed is definitely a favorite, but I reviewed that on my (ahem, 5th or 6th re-read).

April 9, 2013 - 5:31 pm

Annie - I read The Mysterious Benedict Society, and I immediately loved it! I bought the rest of the books too, and that’s the first time I’ve ever bought an entire series! Though the third one wasn’t great, the series overall is one of my favourites! Constance was so awesome!

April 9, 2013 - 4:13 pm

Ginger @ GReads! - The fact that you chose Perfect Fifths as your favorite is why we’re friends… because it’s my favorite, too!

April 9, 2013 - 2:57 pm

Mel@thedailyprophecy - I really want to read Hourglass! I love the covers from this series πŸ™‚

Mel@thedailyprophecy

April 9, 2013 - 2:54 pm

Becky LeJeune - Oh, I love it! Choosing 9 instead of 10 due to layout is just the kind of thing I would do! Jill Mansel and Myra McEntire are both in my to read pile. The only one on your list that I’ve read so far is SOMETHING BORROWED though. Adding things to the must read list!

April 9, 2013 - 2:24 pm

Hollie @ Music, Books and Tea - I haven’t actually read any of the books in your grid…I need to rectify that very soon! (I have read Harry Potter though…and of course I loved it, haha!) I do have Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta on my tbr pile, and I’ll probably follow that up with The Piper’s Son. Fantastic list! πŸ™‚

April 9, 2013 - 2:07 pm

Alice in Readerland - I love The Mysterious Benedict Society, and I really want to read North of Beautiful! πŸ™‚ My TTT list: http://aliceinreaderland.com/2013/04/08/beforeblogging/

Alice @ Alice in Readerland

April 9, 2013 - 1:41 pm

Kelley - Gosh, I haven’t read ANY of these! But The Glass Castle is intriguing. I’m a sucker for memoirs, so that one has definitely caught my eye. Great list! Now I have a bunch of new books to explore. πŸ™‚

April 9, 2013 - 1:35 pm

Candice @ The Grown-Up YA - The ones I’ve read on this list I read AFTER starting my blog, but loved them all the same! And I agree with you about being in the minority on Love Story; I actually really liked this one and the ending!

April 9, 2013 - 12:34 pm

Tara - Oh my gosh, I read The Glass Castle too! What a heartbreaking story but so good at the same time. Speaking of which, I also read the A Child Called It books… talk about brutal :/

April 9, 2013 - 8:03 am

Anna - PERFECT FIFTHS! NORTH OF BEAUTIFUL. I always knew I liked you…

April 9, 2013 - 12:09 am

ashley - Oooh The Mysterious Benedict Society. Excellent choice! I adore that series. As for my favorites pre-blogging, my post should go up sometime soon. I hope!

April 9, 2013 - 12:08 am

Sarah O - I will always love you (and Estelle!) for loving North of Beautiful. I think this needs to become the book I start pushing on everyone from now on! Also I love your layout πŸ™‚

Magan: Shelve It — April 7, 2013

April 8, 2013 - 6:09 pm

Leah @ The Pretty Good Gatsby - You know what, I actually really like the redesign! I’m usually pretty indifferent toward them (at best), but this one is simply lovely. I think it’s the font that does it for me.

HA! Thank you for reminding me that I really need to write my review for You Look Different.. I read it last month and while it definitely wasn’t bad, it was pretty bland and not very memorable. It made for an enjoyable afternoon read though. Hopefully you’ll like it a bit more than I did!

While I absolutely adore my local library, I’m WEEPING over their complete lack of Jennifer Echols! NOT A SINGLE BOOK. I’ve only heard the highest of praises in regards to her book and now it’s looking as though I’m going to have to dive in & buy them. I need to find out what I’m missing!

April 8, 2013 - 10:51 am

Dana - Awesome haul. I won’t be buying anything for a while because my review backlog is insane but I’ll be adding to my Goodreads TBR list for sure! Hope you enjoy all your books!

April 8, 2013 - 8:50 am

Ginger @ GReads! - I’ve tried to read Abbi Glines and just couldn’t do it. I’ll be curious if you feel the same or end up liking her stuff. Yay Sara Zarr! I know how much you love her πŸ™‚

April 8, 2013 - 1:37 am

Alexa Y. - I stopped myself after I bought three books off the Amazon sale (although I’m fairly certain I’m buying more soon). I got Being Friends with Boys as well, yay!

April 7, 2013 - 10:38 pm

Bookworm1858 - Awesome haul-I am looking forward to reading most of these too especially You Look Different in Real Life. Not sure about the redesign for Once Was Lost as I really liked the original.

April 7, 2013 - 9:43 pm

Amanda @ MarvelousCatoReviews - I actually bought Going Bovine recently, as well! I have been dying to read it, so I’m excited to finally have it in my collection.

April 7, 2013 - 4:30 pm

Laura @ the Booksmartie - Oh, I love all These contemporaries here – haven’t read one in a while πŸ™‚ Also, I like both covers for Sarah Zarr’s books, but I prefer the orig!inal title…it was more Special, I think

April 7, 2013 - 1:21 pm

Melissa @ Writer Grrl Reads - Awwww, but it’s always lovely to see your pretty face in your vlog, books or no books πŸ™‚
