Shelve It: The Attack of the Pear

Happy Sunday! Hope you are having yourself an awesome weekend. It’s chilly in New York City, I’m reading some awesome books, and I’m so glad my hair looked decent enough to make this Shelve It video — it has been awhile! I have lots of fun books to share, and also a story about the […]

Alexa S. - HOORAY FOR A VLOG! Also, I’m still stunned at the damage a PEAR did to your book. That’s freaking scary! Good thing your library staff was so nice about it 😉 You also got some pretty dang awesome books in the mail – happy, happy, happy reading!

November 23, 2014 - 10:31 am

Quinn @ Quinn's Book Nook - I’m glad things worked out so well with the library book. We always get people coming in with something happening to the book they borrowed, and if we can, we never charge them.

Also, Estelle, your hair looks so cute like that! And the earrings too.

I have such a hard time narrowing down my favorites, too, but this year feels particularly difficult.

And Brown Girl Dreaming is soooo good. I read it a few weeks ago.

November 23, 2014 - 10:27 am

Leah - CUTE EARRINGS!! Every time you do a vlog I get the urge to finally take the plunge and do one!
haaaa, okay. So. About two years ago, a customer came in toward the end of the night and had a laptop bag with her. She browsed around for a bit while we went through her books (in addition to selling, we also buy books) and she bought some stuff. She makes her way over to the counter where I’m going through her things and pulls out the book she just bought to ask what we would give her if she sold it back to us. WELL! Apparently she had an avocado in her back that she forgot about FOR A WHILE because it had gone bad. When she pulled out the book it was covered in rotten green goo.
I am very curious about The Good Sister & I’m Glad I Did (seriously loving that cover too)!! Definitely looking forward to your thoughts!
OH MY GOSH ESTELLE. Brown Girl Dreaming. Yes. YES. Read it now. It was a 5-star read (!!!) and it made me cry. Absolutely gorgeous and because it’s written in verse you can get through it in no time!

November 23, 2014 - 5:31 am

Rebecca - This blog title makes so much sense now. I haven’t read anything by Christa Desir (yet), but I think I’ll finally get to her next year. Off to check out Maggie’s review, I also had no idea the book was YA. Brown Girl Dreaming! I really want to read that one and can’t wait to hear your thoughts! I’ve also been using my library a lot more, which is great. They recently moved to a brand new building and it’s been so nice visiting and checking out the new books they’ve gotten in and just browsing around. Great Shelve It!

Shelve It: New Books / New Friends / Giveaway

I wonder if I’ll ever NOT be amazed by how fast time is flying. It’s practically been a month since I’ve done one of these, and when I was getting my books together — I was pleasantly surprised how few i’ve bought in the last few weeks. Go me? Don’t get me wrong; so many […]

Alexa S. - I think you got some pretty excellent things book-wise, if you ask me! I still want a copy of Jojo Moyes’ books :) Happy reading!

July 27, 2014 - 4:54 pm

tabithasbookblog - Breathe, Annie, Breathe was so good! It ended up being one of my favorites in the Hundred Oaks series, so I’m interested in hearing what your thoughts are. (or have you already read it)?

And then Blazed looks really good! I’m going to look into it.

July 27, 2014 - 2:59 pm

Brianna - I’m a new reader to your blog. I can’t wait to check out your reviews!

Shelve It: A Pre-July 4th V-Log

Hello! I know, two weeks in a row of Shelve It? What?!? I find it motivates me more when I do these + it’s been forever since I’ve done a v-log. (Don’t ask me about Instagram videos though… I am a wreck at those. How how how do you say anything in just a few […]

Alexa S. - YAY, YOU GOT BRUNETTE AMBITION! (And yes, I know that this makes my Lea Michele fan status clear to the world, but I LOVE HER.) I haven’t read it yet, but I plan on possibly doing so during this long weekend 😉 I’m also going to be reading After I Do soon, which will be my first Reid book, and I’m very much excited to do so. And The Good Girl, and Charlie Glass’s Slippers too! Looks like we’ll both have a happy reading month :)

June 30, 2014 - 9:01 am

Big Kids' Table: Books Equal the Best Accessories - […] (I actually chatted about this book in my Shelve It from this weekend.) […]

June 30, 2014 - 8:43 am

Quinn @ Quinn's Book Nook - Oh my gosh, your bangs are sooo cute, Estelle! I’ll have to check out Lea Michele’s album. Also, Summer of Yesterday! I definitely need to check that one out, even if the Disney details are small.

June 29, 2014 - 7:29 pm

Leah - First things first: flawless hair is flawless. I’m seriously loving your bangs. haha, mine are in DIRE need of a trim – they’ve got this awful Farah Fawcett flippage going on. (& are we nail twins?? That looks a lot like Julep’s Harriet!)

I looove Atria! When I made that post a while ago about my go-to imprints, they were my first thought. I have fantastic luck with their books! Okay, so when you first showed After I Do, I instantly thought of Forever Interrupted. TOTAL DERAIL HERE, but I just added AID to GR & saw that Hannah gave BOTH books 5 stars and I basically have the exact same taste, so I need to get on these STAT.

The Price of Inheritance caught my eye the moment I first heard about it. I’m a biiig fan of art/artist/art-related things in books, so I cannot wait to see what you think!!

So according to GR, For Once in My Life is already on my To Read list and, reading the summary again, yes yes yes! It sounds cute and summery and fun.

Shelf Awareness kept advertising The Good Girl and it sounded great. What has me even more intrigued is that GR’s Readers Also Enjoyed has Dear Daughter listed and I plowed through that. YAY THRILLERS. I’m a little confused though – GR lists DD’s release as July, but my copy says August. ??? Either way, definitely one to keep an eye out for!

I’ve been curious about Wiggs for a while – ladies buy her books by the armload at work! – and this one immediately appealed to me (I’ve got this crazy dream to become a beekeeper & lucky for me, Pittsburgh has lots of classes!).

Shelve It: Saturday & Summer

Oh man. It’s been about a month since I did one of these. But hello! I’m here. How are you all doing? It’s been a busy few weeks so far — friends visiting, lots of work changes, James finally got a small break from school, the weather is nice — you know the drill. Basically […]

Leah - YAY, My Best Friend, Maybe!! I wasn’t sure what to expect, but ended up reading it an entire sitting. So wonderful!

I’m curious about Searching for Sky. I bought Margot (Adult historical focusing on Anne Frank’s sister!!) that I’m itching to read. :) I’m looking forward to seeing what her YA is like!

June 24, 2014 - 9:59 am

Danielle @ Love at First Page - BOOMERANG! I’m soooo beyond excited for that book it’s ridiculous. I hope you love it! That’s a really great haul you got there – can’t wait to see what you think of all those. :)

June 23, 2014 - 12:54 pm

Lucy - You have some awesome book friends! I love verse novels so just added Kiss of Broken Glass to my TBR. Happy summer reading :)

June 22, 2014 - 8:17 pm

Anna - Thank you for the birthday wishes! <3 <3 <3

June 21, 2014 - 8:29 pm

Alexa S. - What a fun book haul post! There are a ton of great titles in here, so YAY YOU. Also, in terms of a book haul, if we were to look at the books I’ve ordered recently, I’m fairly certain I can credit you for at least 1/2 of them. Just saying 😉

June 21, 2014 - 6:18 pm

Jen @Fefferbooks - Cracked Up to Be looks super cute! You know…from the cover. :) But we all love covers, yes?

June 21, 2014 - 1:27 pm

Quinn @ Quinn's Book Nook - Definitely yay for the first day of summer. We’ve been having GORGEOUS weather the last few days in Syracuse, and it makes me so happy. I own a copy of Catching Jordan and I STILL haven’t read it. It’s terrible. Behind the Scenes looks super cute. I so want to read that one too.

Enjoy your goodies, and the nice weather. Also, I’m totally awful and still haven’t mailed out Grasshopper Jungle to you yet. I promise to mail it out very soon.

June 21, 2014 - 10:19 am

Amy @ Tripping Over Books - I’m envious of your willpower to “not buy things”! I have none, although I’ve been better about it, too, come to think of it.
All of these sound wonderful! I’m really curious about Say What You Will. I was drawn to it at first because, superficially, one of the main characters shares my name. But the story itself sounds very emotional and intense. I can’t recall ever hearing about a book featuring two main characters who suffer from disabilities (although I’m sure I just missed some), and certainly never cerebral palsy.
Also, I read Just One Night, and it was lovely. I know a lot of people liked the way Just One Year ended, and I was impressed with the structure for sure, but my heart wanted just a teensy bit more. This was perfect for that part of me.
Good luck with Beauty Queens! I haven’t had the best luck with Libba Bray’s books, alas. This one included. But I hope you get through it on your second go around!

Shelve It: Some Books + Pepper

Can you hear the relief that comes with a 3-day weekend? Especially the one that signifies the start of summer? I’ll admit — the weather isn’t exactly summery in NYC right now. J + I spent the day dodging the rain and also commenting on how chilly it was feeling out. I’m hoping as most of […]

Jess @ Gone with the Words - I’m so happy to hear you liked TFIOS movie because I know you didn’t LOVE the book. And the soundtrack IS TOTALLY AMAZING. I bought it and can say there’s only one song I don’t like. :)

May 26, 2014 - 1:22 am

Lucy - Ooh you saw TFIOS? I bought my tix but will have to wait until June 6. Glad to hear you liked it!

OMG I loved loved loved Everything Leads to You as well. Yay! Perhaps you will like Hold Still better than the Disenchantments? That is a special book.

The Amazon / Hachette situation is so disheartening. Hope it gets resolved soon.

Hope you have a blast at BEA!
PS. Pretty kitty!

May 25, 2014 - 8:01 pm

April Books & Wine - I am glad TFIOS is good.

I need to read Everything Leads To You.

Also, yay buying books, boo strong arm methods.

May 25, 2014 - 3:24 pm

Lola - No 3 day weekend for me as I live in the netherlands. I can’t visit the real BEA, but I’ll be participating in Armchair BEA. I am really excited as it’s my first time participating.
Also your cat looks adorable. I have four rats and sometimes try to photograph them with my books, but they usually don’t want to sit still.
I haven’t read TFIOS yet and don’t really plan on seeing the movie either. I guess I’ll eventually read it, but I am in no hurry to read it. I am afraid I might enjoy it less, because of all the hype surrounding it.

May 25, 2014 - 3:21 pm

Alexa S. - Hiiiii Pepper! Also, thank you for including a link to my (way too long) post, and for sharing the books you’ve bought! I’m also very intrigued by The One and Only now, as well as Everything Leads To You :) Glad you enjoyed them both!

May 25, 2014 - 1:07 pm

Lisa is Busy Nerding - I’m relieved to hear that I’m not alone in not LOVING beyond all loves TFIOS, and to know that you can still like the movie without the over the moon feels for the book. And who doesn’t like a good soundtrack?

Come on, NYC! Bring the summer weather!

May 25, 2014 - 9:25 am

Brittany @ The Book Addict's Guide - Hi, Pepper!!
Oh, interesting to hear about TFioS! I wasn’t a mega-fan of the book either but the trailer actually perked up some emotions in me that I didn’t know I had for these characters. I like both of the leads and I think I like Shailene a lot more in a contemporary setting than I do dystopian. I think she’s good for Hazel.
Ohhh my trip to the bookstore was way worse haha. I left with six books (and they don’t have the one I REALLY set out to buy) and a B&N membership. oops. Guess I better take advantage of that 😉
Happy Sunday! Can’t wait to see you next week!!

Shelve It: Oh Hello + Books

Happy Sunday! Books, books, books! Lots to read and share with you today. I swear, my apartment is going to cave in some day. If that happens, I’ll be sure to record it so I can share it on a future Shelve It. (Ha.) I hope your reading is going well, and in addition to […]

Leah - Your first take was 18 minutes?? DAYUM, GIRL. hahaha if I made an 18 minute vlog it’d be 17 minutes of ums and cricket chirps and a frienzied 60 seconds of “HI THESE ARE MY BOOKS OKAY BYE.”
Sisters + NY + 1920s? Sold.
Scandalous Sisterhood yessss.
I cannot WAIT to see what you think of Lies We Tell Ourselves. That’s one GR keeps reccing to me & I’m beyond excited for it. Historical + gblt! Seriously, it sounds amazing.
Let’s Get Lost sounds absolutely lovely!
omg, E!! Go read What I Had Before I Had You RIGHT NOW. It’s been on my To Read list from the moment I first heard about it!

May 19, 2014 - 10:41 am

Alexa S. - You look so adorable in this video, E! And I absolutely LOVE your necklace. Hooray for an awesome book haul! I’m hoping you enjoy Empire Girls as much as I did, since I thought it was pretty fun (and finished it in one afternoon). Also, I’m very much looking forward to reading Let’s Get Lost! And you’re totally convincing me to go and get Nantucket Red now!

May 18, 2014 - 2:17 pm

Okay back to commenting:

I am so glad Let’s Get Lost is really good. I like the thought of people coming in and out of our lives at the right time.

SINCE YOU’VE BEEN GONE I LOVE IT. That’s annoying when you don’t know when a book is coming.

I need to read those Nantucket books.

Corey Ann Haydu is awesome! Don’t you love when book events are good? Loved Life By Committee!

I like the cover for What I Had Before I Had You. It’s pretty. Also, it does sound really interesting.

Whoop whoop for books! See you at BEA?

May 18, 2014 - 2:07 pm

Tammy - I loved Nantucket Blue and can’t wait to read Nantucket Red. Keep on championing the series, it deserves it. And yes I did munch on a snack while watching (bottlecaps & tootsie rolls). I mowed the lawn this morning so your vlog was my well-deserved break. Thanks!

May 18, 2014 - 2:05 pm

April Books & Wine - Empire Girls sounds awesome, 2 sisters in NYC in the 1920s? SIGN ME UP.

All The Truth That’s In Me is good and it’s a really quick read.

I am so pumped for the Scandalous Sisterhood!

LIES WE TELL OURSELVES ahhhhhh cannot wait to read that one!
