A Tribute to 2014 Reading: End of Year Survey

Hello! Happy new year & all that! Most of the weekend, I’ve been exclaiming in disbelief how this is all possible. Fastest year ever, right? My final duty of 2014 is always feeling out the End of Year Survey. It’s so much fun, but also hard to wrap my head around the 180 books I […]

Alexa S. - So grateful for our friendship, E! Also grateful that I can always count on you to mention books that I haven’t heard about or much about anyway on your survey. Love that you continue to encourage me to push my boundaries with your reading suggestions <3

January 4, 2015 - 5:32 pm

Melissa @ Writer Grrl Reads - I am going to track down some Taylor Jenkins Reid this year, since I keep seeing her books featured on these best of 2014 survey/lists! And, of course, I always trust your recommendations =) And if you figure out how to get two more hours into the day, please let me know! I would also benefit from more hours in my day =P

January 4, 2015 - 2:23 pm

Sara (of The Page Sage) - I loved the Song Girls in To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, especially the relationship between Kitty and Lara Jean. I can’t wait for the sequel (though until this week I thought it was a standalone…whoops)

January 4, 2015 - 9:47 am

Annette - I really liked Sex & Violence, and I like Mesrobian’s writing, but I couldn’t finish Perfectly Good White Boy. It may have been the mood I was in or something…

Great list. I enjoyed hearing about your faves.

January 4, 2015 - 9:46 am

Rebecca @ Reading Wishes - I’ve yet to read any of your best books of 2014 *hides* but they are sound so great and many I hope to get to v. soon! The good thing: I have an excuse since 4/6 are diverse titles 😉 #win Can’t wait for Sun to arrive in my mailbox.

So glad you’re a fan of All the Boys; sorry you now have to wait with the rest of us for #2.

So looking forward to hoisting #DiversityDive with you guys!

I love how you make me even more excited for books I want to read and bring ones to my attention I may have overlooked. It’s always dangerous stopping by, but so worth it :)

January 4, 2015 - 9:28 am

Quinn @ Quinn's Book Nook - I still need to read Everything Leads to You! I really want to listen to is via audiobook, but I don’t think there is an audiobook. I love the cover too. So pretty.

Goodbye to 2014 + End of Year Book Survey | Magan

Hello, friends! Happy last day of 2014! I wish you the happiest New Years Eve and hope you have incredible plans tonight. Dustyn and I will be staying in, playing games, and ringing in the new year in a very low key way. 2014 was full of amazing new firsts, lots of incredible books, less […]

Alexa S. - Loved reading your survey, M! As always, we have very similar book picks for the year, which I LOVE. I’ve read most of the ones you’ve highlighted (and loved them), and for the ones I haven’t, I’m definitely taking notes and looking them up at the library 😉 Here’s to hoping 2015 is an amazing year, for reading + blogging + life!

January 22, 2015 - 12:00 am

When You Relate to a Character You Don't Like, Magan - […] vowed to get caught up on Miranda Kinneally’s work in my 2014 End of Year Book Survey. It’s something Estelle’s been asking me to do (and that I also really want to do). I […]

January 4, 2015 - 9:30 am

Rebecca @ Reading Wishes - I loved a lot of these, too–Open Road Summer, All the Boys and 17 First Kisses! I still need to get round to I’ll Give You the Sun and Isla and actually can’t believe I haven’t read them yet, considering how much I was anticipating them. Long story. Good news, Sun is ordered and on it’s way!

I think I remember your review of Head of the Review, but I’m off to give it another read to refresh. I totally get not being a big re-reader. There’s always so many new books to discover (+ other reasons). Oh, and I LOVED your post on friendship.

January 2, 2015 - 4:40 pm

L.C. Spoering - I love surveys! You’re far more insightful than I can be, though, nice work!

Have to agree most on Nick and Amy in Gone Girl. I still find myself stopping and thinking HOLY CRAP WHAT WAS THAT.

December 31, 2014 - 10:56 am

Brianna - Well, you’ve convinced me to move All the Bright Places up on my list. I just started Deborah Harkness’ A Discovery of Witches, but I’ll read All the Bright Places after that.

December 31, 2014 - 9:01 am

Emma @ Miss Print - *clap* I am always super excited to see To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before getting lots of love (and reading the rest of the answers in surveys like this). Here’s to another great year!

December 31, 2014 - 8:07 am

Tawney Bland - Wonderful post! I have to agree that Heir of Fire and We We’re Liars. I do love your post Lola’s bedroom decor. It was so unique and fun. I can’t wait to see what you bring next year!

December Madness | An Estelle “Shelve It”

Greetings! How are you? Have you been trampled by crowds of shoppers this weekend, perhaps spending time with family, or maybe making some delicious desserts? Well… we have been busy with last minute shopping and lots of crafting (glue everywhere!). Oh the joy of December. This also means: great mail! I’ve been so fortunate to […]

Leah - YOU KNOW HOW I FEEL ABOUT JOJO! Last Letter is beautiful! Silver Bay wasn’t my favorite, but any Jojo is a great Jojo. I’m hoping to finish going through her backlist next year!

I received both St. Martins books too. Lately I’ve had a fantastic streak with their stuff, so I’m looking forward to reading these!

December 23, 2014 - 7:58 am

Rebecca @ Reading Wishes - I was mentioned in your vlog! So – that was a lovely surprise :) And yes, it’s going to be a lot of fun! All the books you got from Alex all sound amazing and I can’t wait to read them. I’m looking forward to hearing you thoughts on them.

December 22, 2014 - 10:08 am

Brianna - So many good books. I’ve been spending too much time on NetGalley and not enough time reading. I always figure it’s a good thing I have no clue how Edelweiss works.

November 4, 2014 - 8:36 am

M, I’m thrilled you’re going to highlight kids’ books! My nieces are starting to get away from storybooks, but I absolutely love them & have begun making a little library for any Leah Jrs that might appear someday 😀
My favorite storybook ever is The Salamander Room by Anne Mazer. It’s been years since I’ve read it (though I just recently found a copy at work and immediately snatched it up!), but I remember being absolutely enchanted + the artwork is gorgeous. I’m also a biig fan of David Wiesner’s Tuesday.
& you ladies are too cruel to ask for just one favorite for the year! CHEATING HERE & YOU CAN’T STOP ME. I’ve narrowed it down to three: STEAL THE NORTH by Heather Brittain Bergstrom, THE TRAITOR’S WIFE by Allison Pataki, & ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE by Anthony Doerr.

November 4, 2014 - 8:26 am

Leah - Again, congratulations! You two are among the sweetest, loveliest women I’ve met and I don’t think I’ve ever told either or you this, but your friendship inspired me to break out of my shell and start chatting up customers at work – a new BFF could be in the very next aisle!
Magan, I refuse to believe your daughter is already NINE MONTHS OLD WHAT. & Netflix is a deliciously wicked place. Estelle, I’m SUPER jealous of your hair cut (so many times I’ve thought about rocking a pixie, but every time I chicken out). LIVING THROUGH YOU, LOVE! Love, love, love you both & I hope you’ll get a reunion soon! ♥

November 3, 2014 - 11:33 pm

Kailia Sage - I am so with you on the Ulta Megan but with DSW because my obsession is with shoes. I also found the PERFECT red lipstick and it’s from Revlon (I can’t remember what it’s called–oops) . Congrats on 3 years ladies!

November 3, 2014 - 9:20 pm

Mariah - Ah, I got so excited that I forgot a couple of things! Three years is AWESOME!! That takes a lot of dedication! I loved your then and now pictures. I am 21 years old, but I LOVE storybooks. One of my absolute favorite authors of this genre is Peter Brown. I was able to meet him this past year, and he is awesome!

November 3, 2014 - 9:16 pm

Mariah - I have read so many incredible books this year. I really cannot pick just one, so here are just some of my favorites that I have read since January: Shatter Me series, Grisha trilogy, Rumble, Just One Year, A Little Something Different, Illusive. There are a lot others, but those are the ones that came to me first!

November 3, 2014 - 5:48 pm

Ashley - God, my favorite thing I’ve read the whole YEAR? I think it was probably either Landline by Rainbow Rowell or The Storied Life of AJ Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin.

You have no idea how much it pains me to not say all the rest! (Laini Taylor! Stephanie Perkins! Jandy Nelson! Maggie Stiefvater!)

November 3, 2014 - 3:51 pm

November 3, 2014 - 3:31 pm

Quinn @ Quinn's Book Nook - Aww, congrats on three years! That is so awesome!

I feel very similar, Estelle, about how blogging has boosted my confidence. I’ve been trying to write a post about it for a year, but haven’t quite figured out the right way yet.

Also, Estelle, I love the pixie cut!

November 3, 2014 - 2:59 pm

Asheley (@BookwormAsheley) - Happy Three Years!! I adore you guys so much and I love this blog. I won’t write a novel here but you both know that. E, if you decide to stop in NC this time at the same place as last time, I now live about 10 minutes away. Here’s to many more!

Tiff @ Mostly YA Lit - Happy blogoversary! I just wanted to say…you ladies are two of my favourite bloggers. Your writing is superb, and your friendship is awesome. Also, you guys have the best recs – After I Do? So helpful!

Fave book I’ve read this year is a toss-up between Open Road Summer and I’ll Give You The Sun.

Fave beauty product right now is Bite Beauty’s two-in-one mini-lipsticks – I have the one in Palomino/Violet, and it’s great for a pop of colour.

November 3, 2014 - 11:15 am

Betty - I love you two!! Not only is your blog one of my favorites, but so is your friendship! It is easy to see how genuine you both are and how much you care about each other! Cheers to many more years of an amazing blog and friendship!!

Oh and my favorite beauty product is Egyptian Magic!

November 3, 2014 - 11:12 am

Jess @ Gone with the Words - This blog and my daughter share the same birthdate! :) Now I’ll always remember it. I’m so happy you two ladies came into my life. You do such an amazing job at spreading the bookish word with your well-thought-out posts and reviews. HAPPY THREE YEARS!!

November 3, 2014 - 10:46 am

Brianna - Happy Blogiversary!

November 3, 2014 - 9:17 am

Meg - Oh! Anddddd my favorite read this year would have to go to Maria Semple’s Where’d You Go, Bernadette, which was ridiculously fun and engaging. I listened to it on audio and was so sad when it was over — I miss the characters!

November 3, 2014 - 9:14 am

Ashley - Oh you two! I know my heart and my life is so much better having you both it in! As for book recommendations. My current favorite children’s book is The Day The Crayons Quit and my favorite book this year in general, so far, is Everything Leads to You.

Hearts in my eyes for both!

November 3, 2014 - 9:13 am

Meg - Woo! Congrats on three wonderful years — you ladies are awesome! Have loved following along and look forward to all that’s to come. :)

In terms of kids’ books, my all-time favorites are Eric Carle’s picture books — but delving beyond that, I was once enamored of a book called The Giant Jam Sandwich by John Vernon Lord. I can remember checking it out endlessly from the school library and just falling in love with the illustrations!

November 3, 2014 - 8:57 am

Jessica - Congrats to turning three! I can’t believe it’s three years already (!!) and I’m so excited to see what else is in store for you guys! I love the joint posts and it’s pretty neat to see how things have changed from then to now. My fave book of 2014 has to be Since You’ve Been Gone. I love Morgan Matson.

November 3, 2014 - 8:27 am

Rebecca @ Reading Wishes - Wow, three years! You guys don’t look a day over two 😉 hehe. I haven’t been following you from the very start, so I really enjoyed the photos and you guys sharing with us your blogging journey from then to now; the things that have changed; and the things that still remain the same. Hope you guys get to meet up again soon! Remember, we want to see the evidence (pictures) of this happening otherwise it didn’t, OK? 😛 You guys are one of my favourite blogs and I hope there are still many more awesome blogging years to come from you guys. On that note, a big congratulations!

Magan’s Farewell to 2013

I just can’t even … how is today the last day of 2013? I’m flabbergasted, really. So much of what I anticipated for 2013 turned out to be completely different, and my reading life was certainly altered so much by the arrival of our foster daughter. Solid reading time became more of a challenge for […]

Alexa S. - I loved reading your survey, M! It makes me giddy/happy that Crown of Midnight is on your list of choices for best books (and can you imagine how much fun it will be to gush over Chaol in the next one?). And I definitely have to check out the books by Sara Zarr and Lindsey Leavitt! I also love that you were more personal with us this year, particularly when it came to your pregnancy and your foster daughter. As always, wishing you lots of love — and extra reading mojo too! <3

January 3, 2014 - 3:57 am

Michelle (Pink Polka Dot Book Blog) - I really liked Winger too!! And Rainbow Rowell became one of my fav new authors for sure. I mean FANGIRL!!! I’m glad you liked the Confessions of an Angry girl series. I swear it doesn’t get enough love and I really want the rest of the series to get picked up by the publisher! I love Tom Leveen, but need to read Manicpixiedreamgirl. It sounds like I would love it. (If you haven’t read Party, it’s really good.) Good luck with the new baby… I got a lot of reading done when I had my son, but don’t know if I got enough sleep that I would have been able to form sentences to describe what I read :) Happy 2014!

January 1, 2014 - 12:33 am

ashley - Oh you. I’m so glad we’ve become closer friends this year. Thank you cereal! <3

December 31, 2013 - 9:25 pm

Melissa @ Writer Grrl Reads - You are amazing! I know that you will embrace life with your new little one with the same grace and ease that you’ve applied to everything else thus far. And, honestly? I think I had more reading time when Marko was super little…except that I was tired more ;). It’s all about balance, and I’m sure you’ll find yours in no time! I, for one, can’t WAIT to meet your new little one! I’m sure that Baby B can hang on for you to finish Ignite Me 😉

December 31, 2013 - 8:17 pm

alisa selene - I loved Eleanor &Park, Fangirl! She is awesome!

December 31, 2013 - 12:22 pm

Lisa Schensted - I wish you ALL OF THE LUCK finding balance in 2014 with blogging and posting and being a newborn’s mama! YOU CAN DO IT.
