Pump-KING for Halloween | Pub Date

Pub Date Header

Hello there! It’s Friday!! Hooray! We are also more than halfway to Halloween, which I will admit is not a favorite holiday of mine. I’m more into autumn decor than ghosts and goblins but I understand that some love it more than Christmas and Santa. Gasp! (Just kidding.)

In the spirit of All Hallows’ Eve, I’m chatting about pumpkin beer. What a shocker; I know. I’m pretty particular about my pumpkin brews. Not too spicy, not too heavy (imperial pumpkins are not my favorite; they are darker and taste more like liquor). So I was really thrilled to see Southampton Publick House Pumpkin Ale at my supermarket this week.  This is the brewery right near my first college (I’ve mentioned this before) and their pumpkin has the subtle flavors I enjoy so much: spice, pumpkin and vanilla extract. This beer is just like a liquid dessert.

(Tip: Before pouring your beer, line the rim of your glass with cinnamon. So so good.)

Now what about a good read to go along with that? Well, it’s getting cooler. How about 11/22/1963 by Stephen King? 849 pages of goodness to keep you totally addicted and wrapped up in your cuddliest blanket. This isn’t a typical “scary” King book; there is time travel, a man on the run, and what happens when one person gets so caught up in an alternate life. Main character Jake has to pretend in order to survive, and also fulfill his task of stopping the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Isn’t Halloween all about pretending?

Other things on my list as Halloween gets closer?

  • Cooking Beer & Cheddar Soup (it’s so so good)
  • Watching Hocus Pocus at least once
  • Buying a little pumpkin for my desk at work
  • Waiting for the Great Pumpkin to arrive…

Another recent beer winner: Shiner Oktoberfest and one I’m looking to try: Red Hook Pumpkin Porter.

Thanks for stopping by another #pubdate! Hope you enjoyed it & will share book/beer suggestions below! Cheers!!

Lucy - This is so fun! I love a good seasonal brew & in fact the man and I recently had a pumpkin beer tasting. We drank Blue Moon Pumpkin Ale, Shocktop Pumpkin Wheat, New Belgium Pumpkick (our fave) and Amer. Orig. Pumpkin Ale. I have to say that after awhile they all blend together haha.

The Southampton sounds really yummy! I hope I can find it here. Great tip about the cinnamon rim too.

Happy fall reading and drinking 🙂

Jess @ Gone with the Words - This will be my first year having pumpkin beers and I have grabbed a couple different ones to do a taste test. I’M SO EXCITED FOR THIS! I hope the ones I picked are good because if not I’ll be very sad, lol.

Brittany @ The Book Addict's Guide - YES, those are exactly the kinds of pumpkin beers I like too! I first saw the title and I was like “Pumking!?!?” because that one tasted really alcohol-y to me BUT I realized it was a cute little play on words there with Stephen King. Excellent!
I agree. I actually haven’t really tried too many imperials because I know I won’t like them. The cans that I grabbed for my pumpkin taste test actually turned out to be pretty good once I got the taste of Pumking out of my mouth haha — but I agree. I like the good blend of spices but subtle flavors. A good balance!

I REALLY want to read this book. It sounds so interesting and it’s been on my TBR for a looooong time (like, almost since I joined Goodreads which is apparently like four years by now). I’m glad to see your recommendation! I really need to make time for it sometime!

Em M - I am a SUCKER for all the things pumpkin – especially pumpkin beer. I also have a tendency to put pumpkin spice on EVERYTHING during the month of October 🙂 Peanut butter toast, my coffee, my oatmeal, etc. I’m reading The Shining by Stephen King right now and it is scaring my socks off. Enjoy your pumpkin beer this weekend!

Asheley (@BookwormAsheley) - Hi Estelle! I WISH I loved Pumpkin-flavored things! This makes me feel so silly around this time of year because not only do I not like pie and lattes, I don’t love the beer…EXCEPT just last weekend I found a fall seasonal pumpkin-flavored that I actually liked enough to BUY if I could find it at a store! It’s the Erdinger Oktoberfest and the reason that I love it is because it is based off of their Hef style and OMG it is delicious. It was a joyous occasion when I could actually claim a seasonal brew that I like since Mike LOVE LOVE LOVES them so much! Not sure if you’ve ever tried this brand but if you can find it, please do! Also, it’s a crime that I’ve not seen Hocus Pocus, right? I think probably so.
