From Hollywood to Your Bookshelf: It’s a Best Friend

Last July, Alexa and I teamed up in double posts about Hollywood stories that would make awesome YA books. We were so so excited about everyone’s responses, and have been anxious to serve up another Hollywood to Your Bookshelf post. Well, what’s better timing than Hollywood Week? That’s right — nothing!! (Refresh your memory: McGosling […]

Alexa S. - I just love Lea Michele. She’s extremely talented, and driven, and I admire how she handles herself professionally. I’m also extremely enamored with her relationship with Jon (they are TOO cute!) and still kind of reeling from Cory ๐Ÿ™ But I love this post! You explained so eloquently about them, and gave some awesome book examples too.

March 10, 2014 - 3:57 pm

Maggie @ Just a Couple More Pages - This is the post idea that made me all ranty! I really like how it came out and I’m glad you added the stuff about other types of friendships at the end. I agree we need more solid, drama-free (or drama-minimum) relationships in YA.

March 9, 2014 - 1:12 pm

Lucy - I love J. Groff! He’s so good in HBO’s Looking, and his friendship with Lea is so sweet. Great book suggestions too! Better Off Friends is one I want to read asap.

March 7, 2014 - 1:33 am

fishgirl182 - Great post. I would definitely like to see more friendships like this in YA books. There is definitely an emphasis in YA but I think friendships are just as important. I have not read a lot of those books you mentioned but I’ll have to try them.

March 6, 2014 - 3:41 pm

alice-jane - I love, love this! I agree that there’s a lot of romance in YA and not enough friendships. I’d love to see friendship stories between guys and girls and how they transform over the years. So much of my life has been influenced by my friends since I’ve leaned on them for support and shared many great memories, so it’ll be lovely to see that reflected in fiction as well.

I’m going to have to check out your book recommendations, especially Better Off Friends, which I’ve heard great things about.

From Hollywood to Your Bookshelf: McGosling Forever

Fun Estelle fact: I am obsessed with pop culture and celebrity gossip. Alexa from Alexa Loves Books and I talk about this… a lot. Which is kind of great. Not everyone gets it. During one of our many conversations, we thought it might be fun to think of some “true” Hollywood stories that would translate […]

From Hollywood to Your Bookshelf: It's a Best Friend, Estelle - […] better timing than Hollywood Week? That’s right — nothing!! (Refresh your memory: McGosling + Taylor […]

August 5, 2013 - 7:53 pm

Liz (Along for the Read) - Oh my goodness, I love this. Can you please write this book? They are definitely one of those Hollywood couples I always wished would rekindle. I was devastated when they broke up.

July 23, 2013 - 2:09 pm

Kristina - I forgot about that clip. WOW. He’s just WOW.

July 23, 2013 - 10:16 am

Asheley Tart (@BookwormAsheley) - Oh yes, this is good. And what a great couple – so pretty together. And that quote about God Bless The Notebook – good gracious. Yes, let’s get these two back together and pronto. (And I love how stylish they both are. They fit well.) FUN.

July 21, 2013 - 9:52 pm

Alexa Y. - Basically, doing these posts was one of the best ideas we’ve ever had! And you chose the perfect pair for yours – Ryan + Rachel! (I’ve watched that Best Kiss video way more times than I would be willing to admit…). Seriously though, their love story? Perfect for a YA book. Perhaps someone should write that one….

July 18, 2013 - 5:35 pm

Leah - Oh. …oh MY. Estelle. This post has done things to me that shouldn’t be happening. I’m seriously LOVING every single thing about this & am totally incoherent right now.

July 18, 2013 - 3:35 pm

sarah - i kind of want to write this now…

July 18, 2013 - 1:43 pm

Allison L - I am kinda in love with this post. I used to love, love, LOVE Ryan and Rachel together, and I too was so upset when they broke up. And that best kiss video? AHHH! I remember watching that when it happened, and then rewinding it to watch it again. Has it really been that long since they broke up? I think part of me still refuses to believe it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

July 18, 2013 - 1:19 pm

elena - I WOULD TOTALLY READ A BOOK BASED ON THIS AND I NEED THEM BACK TOGETHER. LOVE IS DIED THE DAY THEY BROKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SIT ON RYAN’S LAP AGAIN, RACHEL!!!!! RE-ENACT THAT KISS AGAIN!!!!!!!

July 18, 2013 - 12:35 pm

Natalie @ books, etc - You don’t even know how much I love you for writing this post. Like, seriously. I love Ryan Gosling (which is no secret) and I loved him and Rachel McAdams together! I’m so sad I never saw them wandering around the city when they were together – although a couple of my friends did and I’m insanely jealous of them! Oh yeah, Ryan Gosling’s mom lives in my city, so he stops in every once in a while, and I kick myself every time her comes and I don’t see him and make him fall in love with me! ๐Ÿ™

July 18, 2013 - 10:08 am

Britttany @ The Book Addict's Guide - How cute is this! I’m really digging this idea. I loved those two together and HELLO. THE NOTEBOOK. It was freaking fantastic. I even liked it better than the book, so I would love to see a book based on their real romance! I would totally read that.

July 18, 2013 - 9:54 am

Kristin - What an original idea! And you are totally right. I would read a Ryan Gosling YA book in a heartbeat. I love him. Think I’ll go watch The Notebook now…

July 18, 2013 - 9:12 am

Bookworm1858 - Thank you for sharing that video-one of my faves, which indicates to me that today will be a good day.

July 18, 2013 - 3:12 am

Hazel - I totally love these two together!! Oh and I’m really glad to see Sloppy Firsts in your recommendations. I absolutely enjoyed reading that series, it was a crazy ride. <3

July 18, 2013 - 1:51 am

Cee - Oh man, this takes me back!

I was so in love with the two of them. They made sense together. In my teenage drama queen days, I remember thinking that if certain couples (like Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson) did not make it, then love is dead. I felt that way about Ryan and Rachel. I was sooooo devastated when they broke up. Like, WHYYYYY.

The only Hollywood romance I can think of off the top of my head is Lindsay Lohan/Aaron Carter/Hilary Duff? LOLLLL. I think that would make a good YA novel, especially if it became about female friendships (+ girl power and maybe a bit of revenge mixed into it) instead of what actually happened irl with the three.

Magan: Shelve It and a Burn for Burn Giveaway!

Hi you guys! I’m so sorry this is such a late Shelve It today. I was a bridesmaid in my amazing friend Karmyn’s wedding yesterday. Today has been nothing but go, go, go. Despite the fact that I filmed this vlog on Thursday, YouTube decided to absolutely hate me today. I tried to be prepared […]

New York Dinner with Estelle and Alexa!

Last week was positively one of the funnest (craziest, most tiring, stimulating) weeks I have had in a while. My husband and I decided to encourage my mom to take a trip to New York during her spring break; she is a teacher. She has been saying for years that she wants to go there. […]
