Shelve It: The Attack of the Pear

Happy Sunday! Hope you are having yourself an awesome weekend. It’s chilly in New York City, I’m reading some awesome books, and I’m so glad my hair looked decent enough to make this Shelve It video — it has been awhile! I have lots of fun books to share, and also a story about the […]

Alexa S. - HOORAY FOR A VLOG! Also, I’m still stunned at the damage a PEAR did to your book. That’s freaking scary! Good thing your library staff was so nice about it 😉 You also got some pretty dang awesome books in the mail – happy, happy, happy reading!

Quinn @ Quinn's Book Nook - I’m glad things worked out so well with the library book. We always get people coming in with something happening to the book they borrowed, and if we can, we never charge them.

Also, Estelle, your hair looks so cute like that! And the earrings too.

I have such a hard time narrowing down my favorites, too, but this year feels particularly difficult.

And Brown Girl Dreaming is soooo good. I read it a few weeks ago.

Leah - CUTE EARRINGS!! Every time you do a vlog I get the urge to finally take the plunge and do one!
haaaa, okay. So. About two years ago, a customer came in toward the end of the night and had a laptop bag with her. She browsed around for a bit while we went through her books (in addition to selling, we also buy books) and she bought some stuff. She makes her way over to the counter where I’m going through her things and pulls out the book she just bought to ask what we would give her if she sold it back to us. WELL! Apparently she had an avocado in her back that she forgot about FOR A WHILE because it had gone bad. When she pulled out the book it was covered in rotten green goo.
I am very curious about The Good Sister & I’m Glad I Did (seriously loving that cover too)!! Definitely looking forward to your thoughts!
OH MY GOSH ESTELLE. Brown Girl Dreaming. Yes. YES. Read it now. It was a 5-star read (!!!) and it made me cry. Absolutely gorgeous and because it’s written in verse you can get through it in no time!

Rebecca - This blog title makes so much sense now. I haven’t read anything by Christa Desir (yet), but I think I’ll finally get to her next year. Off to check out Maggie’s review, I also had no idea the book was YA. Brown Girl Dreaming! I really want to read that one and can’t wait to hear your thoughts! I’ve also been using my library a lot more, which is great. They recently moved to a brand new building and it’s been so nice visiting and checking out the new books they’ve gotten in and just browsing around. Great Shelve It!

Alexa S. - Bleed Like Me sounds so creepily intense, and I’m insanely curious to see how this turns out. My heart already goes out to Gannon, and I want to read her story!

Jess @ Gone with the Words - This sounds VERY intense! Fault Line was such a topic of discussion last year and I’ve yet to read it, but it definitely put this author on my radar. I’m not a huge fan of the possessive boyfriend thing, but if you say it’s not bad then I’ll keep an open mind when reading this. Great review, Estelle!

Review: Fault Line by Christa Desir | wrapped up in books - […] Estelle at Rather Be Reading: “Fault Line is so tightly written, and feels important without getting preachy. Ben and Ani’s stories could have happened to any one of us or the people we know, and I think that’s why the reading experience was so painful. These horrific things are happening, and people are truly feeling and reacting in these ways in real time. I know it’s not easy to read a book filled with so much sadness, but something has to be said for Desir’s supreme writing style and character development because Ben and Ani have not left me since I closed Fault Line.” […]

Maggie @ Just a Couple More Pages - You know what I think of this one and I pretty much agree with everything you’ve said. But mostly I agree with how freaking brilliant Christa Desir is. The way she tackled such a difficult subject was amazing and yeah, I’m dying to read what she comes up with next.

November 7, 2013 - 11:03 am

Brittany @ The Book Addict's Guide - I am SO glad I had you to talk to while I was reading this book! It’s definitely something you need to emote about while reading.
I felt so incredibly bad for Ani and it was so hard to see how her own opinion of herself changed after the “event” (which was HORRIFYING).
I think everything hit me so much harder too because I know Christa Desir is actively involved with things like this and she’s very vocal about speaking up if something like this has happened to you so I just kept thinking of all of the people this actually HAS happened to and it made me so sad. Also brought an epic amount of reality to the story and it was shocking and heartbreaking.
Wonderful review — Such a tough read, very emotional and definitely riveting.

November 6, 2013 - 8:44 pm

Rachel - I was sooooo nervous about reading your review because I respect your opinion a ton, so I’m so glad you liked this one. I have it out from the library right now and while I’m not going to read it for a little bit (I just finished a book dealing with rape and I need some time to think), but I can’t wait to read it! I’m a little nervous about the intensity, but I don’t think that’ll be too much of a problem. Also, I’m so glad to hear it’s not preachy. That always annoys me.

November 6, 2013 - 5:09 pm

Lena @ Addicted 2 Novels - GREAT review! Your words definitely capture what the novel is about without spoiling it. I’m so grateful I wasn’t eating anything when I read about what happened to Ani…or during any of the book. Poor Ani. Poor Ben.

I definitely can’t wait for Desir’s next book.

November 6, 2013 - 2:09 pm

Alexa Y. - I remember seeing you tweet and update as you read this book, and it made me insanely curious. Your review makes it sound intense and real, and I sincerely want to check this one out now.

November 6, 2013 - 11:58 am

Lisa Schensted - This sounds raw and honest and super well done. I’ll definitely need to read this when I’m in the right emotional state for it!

Magan’s May 12, 2013 Shelve It

Surprise, surprise! I’m back with a vlog for this week’s Shelve It! It’s been a while, huh? I know — I’m sorry about that. There seems to rarely be quiet time to do a vlog with our baby girl happily crawling around everywhere. (But seriously — what a joy it is to have her!) I […]

TLA sounds like it was lots of fun, and most of the books you got are ones that I’m very curious about. Hope you enjoy them!

Ashley - I need to remind myself to be like this when I’m at ALA. Grab what I want and have time for, but don’t be greedy.
