Nailed It: Tales (and Nails) of Friendship

It’s February!

A very special month over here at Rather Be Reading because someone is due to have her baby this month, another someone is celebrating a birthday, and at the end of the month, we celebrate three years since the first time we met! (We’ll let you guess who is who with those first two.)

We decided to sort of throw an unofficial friendship month and our Nailed It book picks reflect that. Hope you are looking forward to these two books (both come out this month!) and we would love to hear what friendship books you have enjoyed!

The Sound of Letting Go by Stasia Ward Kehoe | Release Date: February 6, 2014

nail polish colors matched with the cover of The Sound of Letting Go by Stasia Ward Kehoe

Since we’re focusing on strong friendships for our Nailed It, I want to feature Stasia Ward Kehoe’s The Sound of Letting Go because for so many reasons Daisy and her best friend’s relationship felt so, so real to me. It’s complicated and imperfect. They have struggles and sometimes don’t agree on everything. But you know what? That’s real life. It’s idealistic of me to expect to get along with even my best friends all the time because we’ve experienced so many different things and have different upbringings, right? The cover for this book is so beautiful. The bokeh is gorgeous and I NEED to own all of these colors. I’ve admitted before that I’m not much of a purple kind of girl, but DANG is Reece calling my name!

Nailed It Maybe One Day by Melissa Kantor

Zoe and Olivia are dealt the ultimate test when Olivia is diagnosed with cancer. I can’t even begin to imagine. These two girls have spent so much of their lives together — dancing, hanging out with each other’s families, school, everything — and now this. It was very touching and difficult to watch how their friendship grew and changed during this ordeal. Was their friendship perfect? No. But were they loyal to each other? Did they allow each other to make mistakes and then make up for it? Yes. Yes. Yes. I tried to go mostly upbeat with the colors (it was hard with this cover and the subject matter) but I think it all evened out. The dark forest green (Diane) is actually my favorite. Go figure.

Nailed It: Halloween Edition

Happy October, friends! It’s time for us to discuss book covers and manicures in our monthly Nailed It. This go ’round, instead of choosing an October book release we’re looking forward to, we decided to spice things up by choosing a thriller, horror, or mystery book to fit the mood of Halloween. EEEP. If you’ve been following along with us for a while, you may have noticed that’s not something either of us reads often. Maybe it’s time for that to change?

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Add to Goodreads | Order from Amazon | Release Date: January 1, 2011

I don’t do scary, friends. I don’t do horror either. I am such a scaredy cat. Sometimes I even ask Dustyn to turn the volume down on the TV when he’s watching an episode of The Walking Dead. I just get freaked out easily, okay? I asked for your scariest thriller or mystery book recommendations on twitter this week and let’s just say some of them freaked me out so much the summary scared me for days. I decided that while your suggestions were so awesome, I should probably take baby steps into this land of mystery/horror books. I’ve seen Miss Peregrine so much; lots of people are talking about it, but this cover kind of gives me the chills. I decided my pick had to be something I could actually challenge myself to read. And what a great monotoned color palette it has, right? I’m the world’s biggest gray fan, but this month, I have to say I’m diggin’ the Brandt color. What are your thoughts (on the book and the colors)?

Another Little Piece by Kate Karyus Quinn

Add to Goodreads | Buy on Amazon | Release Date: July 11, 2013

This was such a difficult pick! I’ve read a few thrillers this year: Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas, Find Me by Romily Bernard, and Dead Girls Don’t Lie by Jennifer Shaw Wolf — and they are definitely a nice change up from friendships and romance in all my other contemporary reading. Another Little Piece is labeled as paranormal and a thriller which would be a very very very different kind of read for me. As Cassie from Books with Cass told me, do not read this book in a dark place. It’s THAT scary. Like Magan, I’m not a huge fan of being scared but I think I can handle it more in my reading then I can if I’m watching a movie or TV show. But then I have this over-active imagination… so. That could be interesting. And horrible for my sleeping habits.

Anyway let’s talk colors. Not the most typical scary colors but I love this combination especially the Winona. It’s a color I’ve been eyeing for myself since it was released this month. (Gotta say — isn’t that tutu skirt on the cover the best? This cover has caught my attention so much over the past few months. Love it.)

Nailed It: Upcoming July Releases

Hi there! Thanks for stopping by the blog for another Nailed It!

We’ve decided to mix things up a bit and introduce you nail-polish lovers to another brand we really adore, Zoya. Their color selection is fantastic and the polish is long-lasting. We’ve actually texted one another before that the polish was holding up so well, but we were ready for a color change before it even started chipping. So without further ado, here are two books we’re anxiously looking forward to in July.

The Distance Between Us by Kasie West

It took me so long to pick a book to feature in this month’s NAILED IT. As always, there are so many pretty covers but I love this one a ton. The sun in the background, the color of her dress, the subtle plaid of his shirt. So great. I’m almost done with THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US and I am really liking it. The colors are kind of fall-ish but I could definitely see them popping during the summer too. It’s like the romantic part of summer — at dusk and holding hands!

Truly, Madly, Deadly by Hannah Jayne

Add to Goodreads | Purchase on Amazon | Read Tara at Fiction Folio’s Review

I have to be honest and admit that there are so, so many stinkin’ books I’m looking forward to in July that I picked this one based purely on what I’ve been wanting to do with my nails lately. Dark nail polish has been a popular thing, but I feel it kind of phases out a bit during the summertime. I’ve seen so so so many girls rocking the dark nail polish with lovely coral or mint outfits lately. I absolutely love it! I personally want to push my summery colors aside to try this out. So why don’t you guys step away from the beachy reads and bright polishes to give this dark, mystery thriller a go with me?

Nailed It: May Book Releases Edition

Hola friends!

We were so thrilled by your response to our NAILED IT feature, and here we are again with another post — this time featuring May book releases. This is certainly one of the BEST months in this book year because we are uber excited about so many of the reads that are going to hit bookshelves.

Enjoy + happy painting!!

Magan’s Pick:

Golden by Jessi Kirby. A peek at Magan’s review: “You know that feeling when you love an author and you’re super excited for his/her next release… Then you’re completely blown away because this book … THIS BOOK trumps all the others? And you finish it with a happy, goofy smile on your face, but your heart is heavy because you’re sad it’s over? That’s how I felt after reading Jessi Kirby’s upcoming release, Golden.”

Wild Awake by Hilary T. Smith. You’ll catch Estelle’s review at the end of April, but she’s been calling it one of her favorite reads of the year for a long time now. Here’s a small snippet from her review: “In her debut, Hilary T. Smith weaves electrifying visuals with a raw (and fresh) writing style, as our main character discovers that life as she knows it is a complete mystery.”Nailed It Wild Awake by Hilary T Smith May Book Release
