Alexa S. - Going into What I Thought Was True, I was admittedly a little worried because it had been getting such a mixed reaction. But, like with My Life Next Door, I was easily drawn into this story and these characters and just kept turning the pages. While there are quite a few big dramatic moments that made me hesitate in giving this a full 5 stars, I wound up really liking it a lot!

Shelve It: May 20, 2012

Welcome to another Shelve It! This week I’ve got four books I bought (uh-oh.) and one I received from Bloomsbury via a giveaway! Friday, on Twitter, I asked what your favorite summer reads were, hoping to find some books out of my norm and to branch away from my go-to authors. I’d love to […]

Hannah @ So Obsessed With - I really enjoyed Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour – it’s definitely a good summer read! And, if you want to mix things up a little this summer, I really love Emily Giffin. She writes adult chick lit type books, but they are PERFECT for the pool or beach. My favorite is Love the One You’re With – READ IT!

VeganYANerds - Hey Magan, great vlog! I really love the green accents in your room <3

I definitely want to pick up Amy & Roger, especially is Estelle liked it and you got some great recs for summer reads, I'll be adding some of them to my list too!

And I completely understand how you feel about WWII books and while I rate Code Name Verity a 10 for sadness, it's definitely different to The Book Thief and it did leave me feeling really down for a few days. So when you read it, I will send you virtual hugs 🙂 xox

May 20, 2012 - 6:27 pm

ShootingStarsMag - I still need to read Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour, but I do own it, so I’m in the right direction. haha It looks great though, and it’s a perfect read for this summer.

May 20, 2012 - 5:49 pm

Paige - You got some awesome books this week! I can’t wait to read Revived because I love the cover and Code Name Verity because I’ve had it on my kindle for awhile! I also really need to catch up on Sarah Dessen books because I’ve only read one! Anyways I hope you enjoy everything you got this week and here’s my IMM!

Magan - Elena, we’re like book twins. Seriously – the way books affect us. I will need to be in the right frame of mind for Code Name Verity, but I do look forward to it. I suppose it’s nice to be reminded of things that did happen so as not to forget.

May 20, 2012 - 1:46 pm

Magan - Hi Elizabeth! You WIN for best comment ever! Thank yo uso much for the suggestions. I’m headed to Goodreads right now to check out these authors! 🙂 I’m also headed to your blog. Love the name!

May 20, 2012 - 1:44 pm

Magan - YAY! I hope you love it when you do, Nicole! I’ve added it to my TBR list as well!

May 20, 2012 - 1:44 pm

Magan - Melissa, thanks for confirming Dessen’s books for me! I’ve read The Truth About Forever, but can’t wait to crack open the pages of This Lullaby! Also, I usually don’t read much MG, but will check into that book. Sometimes changing things up can make a world of difference! 🙂 Thanks, lady!

May 20, 2012 - 1:25 pm

Melissa @ Writer Grrl Reads - I wholeheartedly second the recommendations for This Lullaby and The Truth About Forever. These are definitely her two best books (and I’ve read them ALL), but The Truth About Forever is my absolute favourite.

I don’t know if you read much middle grade (I don’t usually, but made an exception for this one because Wendy Darling loved it so much), but I just read Wonder by R.J. Palacio last weekend and absolutely LOVED it. It’s such a feel good read, with a great story and loveable characters. I’d highly recommend it!

May 20, 2012 - 12:58 pm

Nicole - Oooo, I’ve been meaning to read AVALON HIGH!

May 20, 2012 - 10:16 am

Elizabeth - I am so glad I stumbled upon your site!

I am always looking for something good to read and I read an ecclectic mix of things.

For summer, I really enjoy light hearted books. We are constantly on the go and it’s nice to have a book to pick up and just enjoy.

I used to be completely opposed to chick lit, but in the past few years I have really enjoyed a lot of books others would consider this genre.

I love Kristan Higgans…the covers of the books are very girly, and some might pas them over for cheap romance novels but they are nothing of the sort. She is wonderful at creating characters that are flawed yet relatable and loveable. She has a great dialogue and sweet stories. She is also fun to follow in FB.

Another summer favorite is Elin Hildrebrand. All of her books are based in Nantucket and have interesting plots and characters. Good beach reads.

Kristin Hannah is another favorite, although her last book wasn’t my favorite.

I like Jodi Picoult as well but I have read everything out there of hers.

Would love to find something great to read now!

May 20, 2012 - 10:03 am

elena - THIS LULLABY!!!!! Along with The Truth About Forever, it’s my favourite by her. I hope you like Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour. I haven’t read The Book Thief yet but I know I need to! I’m very wary of WWII books because they make me incredibly anxious and as you said, it breaks my heart. Ooh, I just remembered! I think the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series by Ann Brashares would be a good summer read!

You look really cute in the video, btw, and I love all the mint greenness going on in your background. 🙂

Alexa @ Alexa Loves Books - I’m a big fan of Romeo and Juliet, so the moment I heard about this book, I HAD to have it. Luckily, I was able to get it at a signing and meet Rebecca – who is so pretty and so nice in person! I can’t wait to read it this summer 🙂

May 15, 2012 - 6:37 pm

Hannah @ So Obsessed With - “I wasn’t ready for Rosaline’s story to be over when I closed the book.” = I must read this now. Stop reading & reviewing so many awesome books! My wallet can’t take it anymore 🙂

May 15, 2012 - 12:10 pm

Jamie - OMG I NEED THIS!!! I’m definitely getting this on my Nook for the honeymoon!!

May 14, 2012 - 5:23 pm

VeganYANerds - I am so looking forward to this book and even more so after reading your review, Magan! I have a copy and I want to start it this week so I’m glad you found this a book you couldn’t put down!

May 14, 2012 - 3:53 pm

Anna - Basically I want to read this right now.

May 14, 2012 - 12:48 pm

Magan - Daisy, I definitely didn’t like Rob after Juliet arrived either. He just make a complete 180. I didn’t understand how his feelings could transition so fast, but I think mine *probably* really did in high school…just like that. :-/ Ha! It’s okay to be all exclamation-mark-ish about a book! Love your enthusiasm for it! 🙂

Katie: THANK YOU SO MUCH. That was so incredibly sweet of you to say. You’ve made my gloomy day a little brighter. 🙂 xoxo

Rowena: definitely pick it up soon. It’s a great one to lose yourself in and just see how the story unfolds. I’m a sucker just like you!

May 14, 2012 - 12:42 pm

Daisy - YES! Perfect beach/pool/backyard/balcony read!! 🙂 I SO loved this book and though I didn’t fall all that hard for Rob (GAH, what a douche! Well, after he meets Juliet), I am completely in love with Len! Seriously, that boy! *le sigh* I loved the developing friendship between him and Rose as well, it was wonderful! I feel all exclamation-mark-ish over this novel 🙂
Glad you liked it so much!!

May 14, 2012 - 11:56 am

Katie @ Blook Girl - Magan, you and Estelle write the very best reviews! Upon finishing this particular one, I immediately added When You Were Mine to my Wish List and will definitely be stopping by the bookstore this week to pick up a copy for myself.

Thanks for the heads-up on what sounds like a really fabulous read! 🙂 <3

May 14, 2012 - 11:45 am

Rowena - Fabulous review, thanks so much. I’ve been antsy for this book to release so I must pick this up. I am a total sucker for heartbreaking, best friends falling in love with each other storylines and this one sounds like such a good one.
